“The Partisans” Relocated, Rededicated

2018-12-02T14:57:05-05:00December 2nd, 2018|Categories: Featured, Happenings|Comments Off on “The Partisans” Relocated, Rededicated

by Rick Winterson “The Partisans”, by Polish artist Andrzej Pitynski, is a striking quintet of mounted soldiers, an aluminum sculpture cast with a modern, impressionistic treatment – figurative in a way, but not fully so. It measures 33 feet long and 17 feet high, to the tips of the soldiers’ weapons. The five ghostly horsemen, who are carrying muskets that could also be lances, are exhausted, as mortally tired as the horses they ride upon. “The Partisans” depict so-called “cursed soldiers” – freedom fighters who fought against the Soviet Communist takeover of Poland in 1945, which trapped that nation behind the Iron Curtain for more than four decades. Sculptor Andrzej Pitynski has dedicated his magnificent work of art to “freedom fighters anywhere in the World”. [...]

Cardinal O’Malley Visits: With Thanks for 125 Years of Faith

2018-11-27T14:41:07-05:00November 8th, 2018|Categories: Featured|Comments Off on Cardinal O’Malley Visits: With Thanks for 125 Years of Faith

By Richard Campbell The parishioners of Our Lady of  Częstochowa gave Thanksgivings a little early this year with an elaborate celebration that included a special visit from the Archbishop of Boston, Cardinal Sean O’Malley to celebrate their churches’ 125th anniversary. Distinguished guests from near and far crowded in with the congregation for a mass that moved beyond the traditional Catholic ceremony to include testimonies of faith and remembrances of the church that is the magnet for the Polish community in New England.  This would be the first official visit of the Cardinal to the church, and accordingly many detailed preparations for this service were in evidence. High above the sanctuary that was heavily adorned with beautiful red and white flowers, Our Lady of Częstochowa [...]

Armistice Day at 100

2018-11-27T14:45:01-05:00November 8th, 2018|Categories: Featured|Comments Off on Armistice Day at 100

In America of course, we now call November 11 “Veterans Day”.  That is highly fitting, in memory of all our military veterans.  During World War I, American forces joined with European forces, clinching the Armistice on Monday morning, November 11, 1918, at 11 o’clock – exactly 100 years ago.  President Eisenhower changed Armistice Day to Veterans Day in 1954.  Were you aware that 103 military men from South Boston perished in WW I?   by Rick Winterson      This is the three-day Holiday weekend of Veterans Day.  Veteran’s Day itself takes place this Sunday, November 11.  This observance started 100 years ago in 1918, when the Armistice ending combat in Europe during World War I was put into effect on November 11 – [...]

Occupation of Boston – 250 Years Ago This Month

2018-11-27T13:35:02-05:00October 11th, 2018|Categories: Featured|Comments Off on Occupation of Boston – 250 Years Ago This Month

by Rick Winterson  Two and a half centuries ago – 250 years back, in 1768 – Lt. Col. William Dalrymple arrived from Nova Scotia to occupy Boston, per his orders from the King of England, George III. His ship arrived on Friday evening, September 30; his 2,000 red-coated troops disembarked at noon on Saturday, October 1, 1768, exactly 250 years and 10 days ago today, as you are reading this.  The British units comprised the 14th and 29th regiments, along with a detachment from the 59th and a train of artillery (two cannons). After forming up on Long Wharf, Dalrymple’s regiments marched to Boston Common in what Paul Revere called “insolent parade”, words he used on an engraving he had created. Over the next [...]

“She Village” Pops Up in Seaport

2018-11-27T16:24:35-05:00August 10th, 2018|Categories: Featured|Comments Off on “She Village” Pops Up in Seaport

By Rick Winterson First, a few definitions:  WS Development is a Massachusetts-based property developer responsible for transforming 23 of our waterfront acres into South Boston’s Seaport District.  Seaport is currently the City of Boston’s largest single development project.  Parts of this mega-development include an ever-growing group of retail businesses, having “names” such as Mr. Sid and L.L. Bean (do you know what the initials “L.L.” stand for?). In order to foster their all-important retail segment, WS Development has officially unveiled an outdoor pop-up incubator, which they are calling The Current.  The Current will consist of a rotating collection of retail enterprises that feature both local and national brands.  And just as important, The Current has been set up to accomplish some really good things.  Two [...]

2018-07-20T09:41:32-04:00July 20th, 2018|Categories: Business, Featured|Comments Off on Bells Market Upgrade: and New Mixed-Use Buildings Approved

By Richard Campbell Perhaps the surest sign of the coming rehabilitation of the neighborhood surrounding Old Colony is the plan for a new five story residential building with retail space on the site of Bell’s Market. The project designers Stefanov Architects have teamed up with developer Rashide, LLC, to put together a comprehensive proposal to the Boston Development Planning Association (BDPA). The proposal submitted in late 2017 is for new five-story 32 new residential rental apartments that are primarily market rate, with 5 affordable units and will include 23 below level parking spaces. It will have about 7,000 sq. feet of retail space- which will include a new Bell’s Market, on the 9th street side and a café on the 8th street side. Other amenities [...]

Blue Man Group Contest Rocks Lawn on D

2018-07-13T09:37:39-04:00July 13th, 2018|Categories: Featured, Lifestyle|Comments Off on Blue Man Group Contest Rocks Lawn on D

By Richard Campbell The site of a flash mob became Lawn on D when its festivities commenced this past Saturday, including more lawn games than usual, rock climbing, ice skating, giant collision space balls, and the fifth annual Blue Man Groups drumming contest for participants to get an opportunity to join the Blue Man Group in performance onstage. Tyler Peterson from Marblehead was the winner in a knock down drag out drumming battle between five participants, and also won over $6,000 in prizes that included a DW drum kit, Sabian cymbals, Vic Firth sticks- plus tickets and prizes from Blue Man Group. But perhaps the biggest win was being able to perform a piece called “Drum Finale Throwdown” with the famed Blue Men and Blue [...]

From the Dugout: M Street Softball League

2018-07-12T17:11:02-04:00July 12th, 2018|Categories: Featured, Lifestyle|Comments Off on From the Dugout: M Street Softball League

By Richard Campbell It was just cooling off this past Thursday night as the M Street League gathered for an amiable showdown at the edge of Medal of Honor Park.  The Silk Worms, coached by Dan Barzottini were facing Fat Baby, coached by Dave Piccirilli, and I would say they were fairly well matched in some respects, but the Fat Baby had the humor and the hits. Besting the Silk Worms 9-5, the scrappy Babies put on a show, and kept the small attending audience’s attention with side splitting one liners. The M Street League has 25 teams divided in two Divisions, with Lincoln Tavern 11-1 and City Tap House 10-1 at the top of their respective divisions, these two teams are the ones to [...]

Not Pot for this Summer: Adolescent Brain Development 101

2018-06-29T09:40:19-04:00June 29th, 2018|Categories: Featured, Lifestyle|Comments Off on Not Pot for this Summer: Adolescent Brain Development 101

By Richard Campbell Now that the flood gates are about to open on the Massachusetts marijuana experiment, as a follow-up on Rick Winterson’s questions last week, it would be prudent to introduce some of the latest studies on the effects of the drug on the adolescent brain.  The one thing that should be remembered is that adolescent brains (particularly male adolescent brains) are not fully formed and the consequences of smoking pot at this stage in life are different from adult use in many ways.  Anyone who has read the literature will come to this conclusion.  From more “mild” effects, like partial cognition and memory impairment, to the extreme effects for adolescents with vulnerable genetic predisposition towards mental illnesses, the record is not very encouraging. Cannistraro Opens “The FID” at 25 Fid Kennedy

2018-06-21T09:51:16-04:00June 21st, 2018|Categories: Business, Featured|Comments Off on Cannistraro Opens “The FID” at 25 Fid Kennedy

by Rick Winterson      Thursday morning was a busy, bustling day in South Boston’s prime industrial area, its Marine Industrial Park, now entitled the Raymond L. Flynn Marine Park.  Promptly at 11 a.m., Flynn Marine Park became even busier.  J.C. Cannistraro LLC, a two-generation, family-owned firm engaged in mechanical contracting, formally and officially opened the doors to “The FID”. “The FID” is a highly evocative name that Cannistraro gave to the BPDA-owned building they now occupy at 25 Fid Kennedy Avenue.  Thomas “FID” Kennedy was a longshoreman; he was also an uncle of John F. Kennedy – think “Uncle TFK and Nephew JFK”.  A fid is actually a marine hand tool-of-the-trade used for splicing rope.  It resembles a piece of thin, tapered, sharpened doweling.  [...]
