St. Patrick’s / Evacuation Day Season Kicks Off

2018-03-08T11:46:52-05:00March 8th, 2018|Categories: Featured, News|Comments Off on St. Patrick’s / Evacuation Day Season Kicks Off

by Rick Winterson Brunch is a current fashion in South Boston these days, but few realize that for many, many decades, “Brunch in South Boston” has actually been a key local way to celebrate. Last Saturday’s Jimmy Flaherty Kick-Off Breakfast (the 138th, courtesy of the South Boston Citizen’s Association) was just one example of this long-standing neighborhood tradition. And it was a successful kick-off of the “Southie Season”, which leads up to the Parade on March 18. A full house gathered in Tom Connolly’s Seapoint Banquet Room. They were entertained by the Irish tunes of Bob Fowkes’  Curragh’s Fancy. The shoulder-to-shoulder crowd had many lifetime Southie residents, as well as a goodly number of newcomers. Clerk of Court Michael Donovan performed admirably as the 2018 [...]

Thank you to Junior Achievement (JA) of Northern New England for their continued partnership with State Street and South Boston Catholic Academy. JA invests in youth today to empower them to strengthen our communities tomorrow. Through hands-on learning experiences delivered by State Street volunteers they are exposing students to different career paths and businesses, money management and how to start a business. Students are also taught critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration skills that they’ll carry with them to middle and high school and beyond. We are grateful to State Street and JA for bringing this program to South Boston Catholic Academy for 10 consecutive years. Students at South Boston Catholic Academy anxiously await the JA in a Day program each year, as do the State [...]

New England International Auto Show Opens

2018-01-12T14:28:07-05:00January 12th, 2018|Categories: Featured, Lifestyle, News|Comments Off on New England International Auto Show Opens

By Richard Campbell The Boston Convention and Exhibition Center in the Seaport hosted the 2018 New England International Auto Show with the theme Driving the Future featuring a polished consumer centered vehicle line up with a few extra frills.  In the standard issue cars Toyota seemed to own the floor in demonstrations and displays revealing it’s Olympic branded RAV4 and the usual line of loaded Camry’s. There were some clever advertising campaigns, for example the virtual reality Nissan Star Wars box in which both kids and adults could interact with the famous robot characters from the latest installment of that venerable franchise. The Star Wars series of cars included the Rogues, Altimas, and Maximas customized by Lucas Films. People wishing to see a string of luxury vehicles [...]

South Boston Catholic Academy Grade 4 News!

2018-01-12T14:26:11-05:00January 11th, 2018|Categories: Featured, Happenings, Lifestyle, News|Comments Off on South Boston Catholic Academy Grade 4 News!

Students in Grade 4A at South Boston Catholic Academy listened to J. K. Rowling’s detailed and graphic description of Diagon Alley.  Students then took what they heard and used it to draw what they imagined Diagon Alley would look like. The 4B students participated in a genre study of Biography. By reading many examples of high-quality biographies and sharing features and formats, the fourth graders developed and shared their own definition of the genre. On this day, Reilly and Sebastian reviewed another group's definition of the biography genre by placing a star next to the good ideas and writing a check mark next to the parts they included in their own definition. Through constructing their own understanding of the genre, 4B developed a deep [...]

BPS Tries Damage Control On School Start Times

2017-12-21T19:27:19-05:00December 21st, 2017|Categories: Featured, Happenings, News|Comments Off on BPS Tries Damage Control On School Start Times

Three Hour Meeting Held at Condon School By Richard Campbell Students and parents of the Boston Public Schools were activated into respectful protest Tuesday night at the Condon School in South Boston over the ham handed moves by the BPS Board’s to change start times for elementary and secondary students- seemingly with little regard to parent’s opposition to major aspects of the plan. The community at the Condon School was in unanimous agreement about the efficacy of changing times for students. Expressed in so many ways by many people the consensus was: “Please don’t do this, it will ruin our lives.” While the decision to move older adolescent kids to later start times had a slightly better reception, the concept of completely disturbing the lives [...]

Seaport Restaurant Review: Gather in a Cozy Enclave

2017-12-21T17:15:19-05:00December 15th, 2017|Categories: Featured, News|Comments Off on Seaport Restaurant Review: Gather in a Cozy Enclave

By Richard Campbell It’s a little tough to find reasonable restaurants in the Seaport that are more sophisticated than glorified junk food and more accessible than pricy establishments. District Hall’s Restaurant, Gather, isn’t exactly a bargain, but for tasteful dinner and lunch, it represents a reasonable compromise. Starting with the small, but resourceful wine list, you can find a reasonable Pinot Grigio from Anterra, Italy, or a solid Chardonnay from Sonoma in the whites, to a moderate California Merlot or Cabernet in the reds.  The price of admission for the few French wines isn’t extraordinary in most cases, and unlike some places in the Seaport they give you a decent sized glass.  The beers on tap represent a small but original selection of crafts and [...]

DAV 5K Race Warms Hearts on Cold Day

2017-11-21T17:45:26-05:00November 16th, 2017|Categories: Featured, News, Sports|Comments Off on DAV 5K Race Warms Hearts on Cold Day

By Richard Campbell   Saturday morning was the coldest day of the year so far, but that did not prevent veterans, runners, and supporters from showing up bright and early to Castle Island to brave the weather to walk, ride, run, and roll to raise awareness and funds to benefit disabled veterans.  The sponsoring non-profit organization, Disabled American Veterans supports over a million veterans with the mission to make sure no one who has served our country and suffered injuries is left behind.  With so much lousy news lately, it was nice to see the spirit that motivated participants, sponsors, and loads of volunteers creating a safe and festive celebration of sport. It was a tad bit cold for taking pictures, with the wind chill [...]

The Joseph “Dodo” Nee Foundation’s “Time”

2017-10-18T14:40:13-04:00October 18th, 2017|Categories: Featured|Comments Off on The Joseph “Dodo” Nee Foundation’s “Time”

by Rick Winterson It was quite an event – truly memorable. The occasion was the first fundraiser for the Joseph “Dodo” Nee Foundation. The best way to describe the event is to call it a celebration – a celebration of Dodo Nee’s life. He was South Boston born-and-brought-up, a Marine veteran, a Boston firefighter for 28 years, and a participant in countless community activities right up until the day he died earlier this year. But most memorable of all were his roles as a family man and a friend of everyone he met. Hundreds showed up for the first fundraiser in support of the Joseph “Dodo” Nee Foundation last Friday evening at Florian Hall, the home of Boston Firefighters’ Local 718. That by itself symbolized [...]

by Rick Winterson Would you please reserve just a few evening hours about two weeks from now? On Wednesday evening, November 1, from 5 to 8 p.m.? The EVENT: “The Condon “Friendship” Fundraiser – a crucial fundraiser to support new and enlarged programs at the Condon Community Center. The LOCATION: PubliCo on the corner of Dorchester and West First Streets - #11 Dorchester Street, to be exact. A word or few about PubliCo: It’s a bistro with the full name of “Public & Company Street Bistro & Garden”. But it’s more than that, especially inside. There is a garden space in the middle of PubliCo’s interior. It has been carved out with an interior design that’s intelligent, innovative, and creative. How else would it be [...]

A History of Dissent: Boston Common

2017-08-26T20:44:20-04:00August 26th, 2017|Categories: Featured, Lifestyle|Comments Off on A History of Dissent: Boston Common

By Richard Campbell The long history of the Boston Common may be obscured to contemporary visitors who wade at the Frog Pond, take merry-go-round rides, or picnic on the lawn- but it has a history as a place of dissent that continues to echo down to this day.  What is America’s oldest park began as a 42-acre private cow pasture, owned by a hermit English Clergyman William Blackstone (Blaxton) who received a patent for the property three years after the arrival of the Pilgrims, in 1623.  Blackstone suggested to original settlers in Charlestown’s fetid swamp- who were suffering from a shortage of potable water- that they should cross what was then the peninsula of Shawmut to settle on the Boston side. Shawmut in Indian [...]
