Easter Around Southie

by Richard Campbell The Saturday before Easter was for once near perfect weather, and South Boston Online went out to some of the local shops to see how they are doing. First stop Stapleton’s to see how Yanni is doing with the “rush”-. He looks pretty relaxed to me! He won’t be this year as he’s starting a new enterprise. Then we stopped to talk to the ladies at Joseph’s, and they posed between the virtual mob scene to show us some Easter treats, and picked up a deli sandwich. They are coming up on a special anniversary soon- more on that later. Then onto Cafe Porto Bello, where I did convince the young shy waiters were shy, but the smell of sauces coming from [...]

Celebrating its seventy-fifth year, the organization has a multi-tiered mission to aid in the professional development of educators, promote curriculum development, healthy school environments, and advocate for educational equity. 2018-11-27T13:06:35-05:00March 21st, 2018|Categories: Happenings|Comments Off on SBCA’s Annual Banquet – A Great Evening

by Rick Winterson Last Friday saw the South Boston Citizens’ Association (the SBCA) 138th Annual Evacuation Day Banquet, a part of the 242nd Annual Evacuation Day Events. It commemorated March 17, 1776, the day that the British left Boston for good – the very first victory in our War for Independence commanded by General George Washington. Some 300 celebrants attended, greeted by the SBCA’s 11-year President Tom McGrath. For your information, the SBCA is the nation’s oldest civic organization. It was a gala indeed. Curragh’s Fancy provided Irish songs and music. Malden Comic Dave Russo showed no mercy to the Head Table – the “Head Table to Infinity”. The Convention Center’s corned beef and cabbage was outstanding. The high point of the evening was the [...]

by Rick Winterson Perhaps a definition and a bit of history at first: the South Boston Neighborhood House at H and Sixth is affectionately nicknamed “The Ollie”, standing for the Neighborhood House’s Founding Spirit, Olivia James. When “Ms. Ollie” started the Neighborhood House 117 years ago, it was originally a settlement house. Briefly stated, it changed with the times - it now serves both the young and senior residents of South Boston, supporting family and neighborhood life in countless ways. In just 15 days, Friday, April 6, from 6 till 10 p.m., the Neighborhood House will hold its Annual Gala – a truly elegant live and silent auction, along with complimentary beverages, hors d’oeuvres, music, and dancing. You can preview the auction items at facebook.com/ [...]

Above: Woods School of Irish Dance students are ready for the parade! By Rick Winterson You don’t need to be told that South Boston, Boston, and much of Eastern Massachusetts have been plagued with triple Northeasters that included heavy snows and gusts of hurricane-force winds. However, South Boston Online wants to assure you that the St. Patrick’s/ Evacuation Day Parade will step off from the staging area near Broadway Station at 1 p.m. this coming Sunday, March 18 – come rain or come shine. In other words – the Parade is ON, as planned! The South Boston Allied War Veterans Council (the SBAWVC) is the group that has been responsible for the Parade for the last 70 years. Every year under the SBAWVC’s stewardship, the [...]

Snow Mazing

2018-03-08T14:29:13-05:00March 8th, 2018|Categories: Happenings, News|Comments Off on Snow Mazing

by Richard Campbell South Boston Online took a morning stroll to see the effects of the second North-Easter that fell wet and heavy and started melting almost as soon as the storm was over.  Nothing shows off the neighborhood homes and institutions like a clean blanket of snow. The streets were quiet, except for some school kids playing in the snow and a few ambitious South Bostonians shoveling.  We’re thinking it’s a good omen to get the snow over with before the parade happens! Oh, please, not more!     Backyard Garden View from Carson Beach The Heights Snow Crew at St. Monica's

Former Dorchester lawmaker introduced Collins at campaign kickoff. Former State Sen. Linda Dorcena Forry has endorsed her longtime colleague and friend, state Rep. He understands the issues that connect us that whether you’re from Mattapan or South Boston … we stand together.” “We have worked together on so many issues and he will make a great senator,” she added. CPA Forum at Tierney Center

2018-02-28T15:09:31-05:00February 28th, 2018|Categories: Happenings, News|Comments Off on CPA Forum at Tierney Center

by Rick Winterson First, a brief backstory: “CPA” stands for “Community Preservation Act”, an act that the Massachusetts state legislature passed in 2000, seventeen years ago. Brief ly stated, this involved levying a 2% surcharge on existing property taxes, which would then be earmarked for funding preservation projects. “Community Preservation” was loosely defined; it included three general types of project – 1.- Historic, 2.- Parks & Open Space, and 3.- Affordable Housing. In the following year, 2001, the CPA’s 2% levy failed to pass in Boston. Fifteen years later in 2016, with the CPA surcharge being cut in half to 1%, the preservation levy passed, garnering an impressive 74% of the vote. As of now, Boston’s surcharge generated $20 million ($20,000,000) in preservation funds for [...]
