Concert on the Ramparts

2018-02-08T06:17:39-05:00August 25th, 2016|Categories: Featured, Happenings|Comments Off on Concert on the Ramparts

by Rick Winterson       Not only was last Saturday a fine of example of South Boston’s sunny summer weather, it also featured the next to last Concert on the Ramparts.  These are presented by WUMB-FM, the broadcast arm of UMass Boston.  We’ll remind you to think about spending next Saturday afternoon as WUMB’s guests at their last summer concert on Castle Island. The opening group – from UMass Boston – was a modern jazz quartet who call themselves “Jazz T”.  Jazz T is that classic jazz quartet:  a lead vocalist with keyboard, bass, and drums.  Singer Olive Martin has an excellent, tuning-fork-true voice, a bit evocative of Sarah Vaughan or even Billie Holiday.  There was a touch (or two) of be-bop in Jazz T’s [...]

Dedham Savings Opens in South Boston

2016-08-18T11:35:51-04:00August 18th, 2016|Categories: Featured, Happenings|Comments Off on Dedham Savings Opens in South Boston

by Rick Winterson       This Monday morning, on August 15 at 8:30 a.m., Dedham Savings (“your bank”) opened the doors of its Branch at 636 East Broadway for the first time.  Six key Dedham Savings people did the honors (please see the photo above).  At the end of the day at 4:30, they cheerfully expressed their satisfaction at how it all went.  Please note this was Dedham Savings so-called “soft” opening, but don’t be fooled by the word “soft”.  They are fully opened, expertly staffed, and providing everything you would expect from a full-service branch bank. The bank’s new quarters have an open feeling, with an unobtrusive but warm color scheme.  The interior is clearly a place of business, but there are amenities – [...]

2016 “Breakfast of Champions” Awards

2016-08-18T11:25:33-04:00August 18th, 2016|Categories: Featured, Happenings|Comments Off on 2016 “Breakfast of Champions” Awards

The South Boston Community Health Center is an institution around here – that goes without saying (even though we said it).  The Community Health Center’s concept of servicing health needs in an urban neighborhood has caught on.  In fact, the Geiger-Gibson Community Health Center in Dorchester and our own at 409 West Broadway were the first two such health organizations. Each August, the South Boston Community Health Center confers a set of awards upon those people, both inside and outside of the Health Center’s organization, who have supported the South Boston community in special ways.  They are called the “Breakfast of Champions” Awards, a humorous and memorable brainchild of the Health Center’s Margaret Lynch.  And of course, ‘the title “Breakfast of Champions” is based upon [...]

Team Southie

Pictured last Monday, August 1, at Carson Beach is “Team Southie” from the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) which competed against other DCR lifeguard teams from the Nahant and Revere beaches. The annual event featured life-saving techniques and distance swimming, giving the lifeguards the opportunity to show off their skills, but more importantly, to hone these lifeguard skills so they can serve and keep the public safe in an optimum manner. MAYOR WALSH OUTLINES CHANGES TO STRENGTHEN OVERSIGHT AND SAFETY AT BCYF DROP-IN PROGRAMS

Mayor Walsh today Boston Centers for Youth & Families (BCYF) to announce that all BCYF drop-in programs will follow rigorous new standards in an effort to strengthen oversight and child safety. These changes are a result of an assessment of all protocols and procedures at the city's summer camps and drop-in programs that was conducted this week. Summer camps are currently regulated by the City of Boston's Inspectional Services Department (ISD) per the Department of Public Health (DPH), and summer camps have clearly defined and documented operating procedures, specifically with respect to child safety. Drop-in programs, as defined by state regulations, do not fall under ISD regulations, and as a result have fewer clearly defined and uniform operating procedures. "The city experienced a terrible tragedy [...]

Southie – A Good, Healthful Place to Be

2016-08-04T08:59:01-04:00August 4th, 2016|Categories: Featured, Happenings|Tags: |Comments Off on Southie – A Good, Healthful Place to Be

Two recent events confirm something that South Boston Online has always said:  South Boston is a great place to be.  Both events confirmed that to us more emphatically than ever.  The first was the “Fun in the Sun” Health Fair, held at the McCormack Pavilion on Carson Beach last Thursday, July 28, from 9 a.m. till 3 p.m.  The second was the annual First Monday“Kid’s Day” on August 1, from noon till 9 p.m. at South Boston’s Farmers Market in Perkins Square.    As you would imagine, the Health Fair’s exhibits and activities were devoted to the participants’ state of health.  We have room to mention only a few – perhaps the most impressive was the Blum Family van that rolled up to the [...]

It’s always a pleasure to welcome a new business to South Boston.  We live in a growing, thriving neighborhood with plenty of room for opportunity.  The new enterprise we are “Making It Our BUSINESS” to report on this week is MAXIM Pharmacy.  MAXIM is located at 267 Old Colony Avenue, where it intersects with Dorchester Street (617-268-4500; info@maximpharmacy.com). The Pharmacy Manager and owner of MAXIM is Hieu B. Vinh, R. Ph. (for Registered   Pharmacist).  He of course takes the integrity with which he fills his prescriptions as his most important responsibility.  You are in good hands with him.  Hieu also prides himself on the service he renders to his customers, which he calls “Full Service”. Service can mean something small but important.  For example, MAXIM [...]

A Wildflower Field Trip

2016-07-14T12:25:04-04:00July 14th, 2016|Categories: Featured, Happenings, Lifestyle|Tags: |Comments Off on A Wildflower Field Trip

This spring, on Thursday evening, May 5, George LoCascio III gave the 36th Annual Marjorie Gibbons Lecture in the Public Room of the South Boston Branch Library.  It was a great success, as George described his search for wildflowers located within the urban perimeter of South Boston.  He had spotted and identified 75 distinct species. Now, George is dedicated to his profession, and he likes to spread the word, so he voluntarily arranged a follow-up field trip to Castle Island, where many of our local wildflowers are found.  A group of ten hardy (and hearty) searchers gathered last Saturday afternoon, July 9, to carry out their own search, guided by George.  He had a handout and his reference book with him:  “Newcomb’s Wildflower Guide”, 1977, [...]

Opinion Piece – Much ado about nothing

Boston Latin School’s alleged problems overinflated by a few By Kevin Devlin The recent news about Boston Latin School was a total joke. The cries of social injustice and the allegations of disciplinary disparities is a false narrative to appease a few disgruntled students. “We must do all we can to change the climate of racial injustice that both students, teachers and administrators face in the Boston Public Schools on a daily basis,” said Jacqueline Rivers of the Ella J. Baker House. That would be sad but it’s not true; totally exaggerated. I worked as a Boston School Police Investigator for fourteen years (1981-1994) and had the opportunity to meet a lot of dedicated teachers and administrators, as well as tons of good kids. The [...]
