South Boston will not soon have another Starbucks Coffee. The city's licensing board unanimously rejected the license for a Starbucks proposed for the corner of L Street and East Broadway on Thursday morning. Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh "was also opposed due to the lack of neighborhood support," wrote a spokesperson for the mayor in an email Thursday. The proposed Starbucks was for a property at 749 East Broadway. Michael Norton owns the property. According to numerous articles, there was much opposition this week to the proposed Starbucks. Last week, community members gathered at the location, South Boston Online reported: "In general, those gathered were firmly against opening a Starbucks there, due to potential traffic problems, a lack of neighborhood notification, and no perceived need for yet [...]

2016-05-04T14:22:50-04:00May 4th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Tags: |Comments Off on Rev. Burns Stansfield celebrates 25 years at Fourth Presbyterian Church

By RICK WINTERSON Twenty-five years ago, on Sunday, May 1, 1991, the Rev. Burns Stanfield stepped into the sanctuary of South Boston’s Fourth Presbyterian Church on Dorchester Street, where he had just been appointed as pastor. Thus began a historic transition period for the church, as it grew and prospered, became an integral part of the South Boston scene, added a parish center next door, and developed a well-deserved reputation for music and the performing arts (Burns is himself a talented professional musician). Last Sunday, May 1, the church dedicated its annual fundraiser to Burns, his dedicated community leadership, and his highly successful tenure as the pastor of the Fourth. It was exactly 25 years to the day after Burns took up his calling here [...]

2016-05-04T14:22:05-04:00May 4th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Tags: |Comments Off on Sr. Maryadele honored at Laboure Reception

By RICK WINTERSON There was a pleasantly insistent buzz in John Hancock Financial’s stunning fourth floor atrium last Thursday evening. It was a gala crowd of South Boston’s staunchest supporters. Everyone anticipated the service award, to be conferred upon Sr. Maryadele Robinson, as she approaches her 30th year at South Boston’s Laboure Center. Fr. Joe White asked for a blessing, “Lord God of All Creation.” And how rare is applause after a benediction? Well, it happened at the Laboure Center’s Spring Reception last Thursday. Without the slightest exaggeration, a glorious spirit pervaded the crowd of guests and the very air all around them. Bob Kelly, the chair of Laboure’s advisory board, emceed the fete; his first speaker, Catholic Charities President Deborah Rambo, extolled Sr. Maryadele’s record [...]

Cancer survivor gives back by organizing fundraiser

2016-05-04T14:20:55-04:00May 4th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Comments Off on Cancer survivor gives back by organizing fundraiser

How does a cancer patient from around here receive a cure from a U.S. Navy midshipman on the West Coast, and then engage South Boston’s most popular local DJ to help him give back? We won’t say it’s easy, but we will say it’s actually happening. The chain of these coincidences will be completed Friday evening in the Boston Teachers Union Hall. Cancer survivor Donnie Lewis received a stem cell transplant from Danny Alcantor, a 21-year-old midshipman from California. Alcantor was the one, perfect match to Donnie Lewis out of 25 million members of the Bone Marrow Donor Registry. Donnie Lewis will give back, by hosting a fundraising dance with Dru Errico serving as DJ. The event is at 8 p.m. at the Boston Teachers [...]

Sunday, May 1, saw Polish-Americans parade from Our Lady of Czestochowa Church to the Polish-American Citizens Club on Boston Street, where a block party took place. Other Polish heritage organizations were honored guests at the celebratory event. The locale of the festival is now officially known as “The Polish Triangle.” Sources claim that it is one of the oldest Polish enclaves in America. -Rick Winterson The crowd assembles for the 2016 Polish Fest at Our Lady of Czestochowa Church on Dorchester Avenue in South Boston. Drug take back held to collect unused medication

2016-05-04T14:19:57-04:00May 4th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Tags: |Comments Off on Drug take back held to collect unused medication

Kay Walsh from the Action Center (South Boston FAN/CAN Advisory Collaborative) is assisted in Saturday’s drug take back by Rodolfo, Judy and Kenya of the South Boston Youth Council. The drug take back is an effort to collect and destroy unused prescription drugs, so that addictive medicines don’t make their way into the hands of dealers and users. It’s simple – just bring unused medicines to the collection point. The police department – in this case, South Boston’s Station Six commanded by Capt. Joe Boyle – will then make sure these drugs are destroyed. -Rick Winterson

A few gripes worth mentioning: M Street Park issues

2018-11-27T13:06:36-05:00May 4th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Comments Off on A few gripes worth mentioning: M Street Park issues

By KEVIN DEVLIN When I was at the Medal of Honor Park at M Street last Saturday morning, April 30, to take pictures of volunteers involved in the Boston Shines Initiative, I noticed four dogs without leashes roaming around the park. Their owners walked casually near them. I mentioned to them that there was a leash law in Boston. The young man tried to stare me down while the three women just kept walking. Now that summer is approaching, kids will be playing in the nearby playground at this park. All dogs should be kept on leashes for their safety and the safety of others. State law and city ordinance prohibit this behavior from dog owners and they can be fined. For the protection of [...]
