7th Annual Boston Seafood Festival Returns to Fish Pier

2018-11-27T16:53:35-05:00August 9th, 2018|Categories: Lifestyle|Comments Off on 7th Annual Boston Seafood Festival Returns to Fish Pier

By Richard Campbell The Boston Fisheries summer event went off well to an enthusiastic crowd, despite looking a little long in the tooth, it still represents a family fun annual event. With seafood vendors and chefs promoting various ways to prepare and consume their product, some mild entertainments, fresh seafood meals from a variety of sources, the core of the festival is pretty good. But there is no question: the event’s down-home nature needs an aesthetic brush up. The festival is about good seafood, and that it has in spades.  The food demonstrations, along with accommodating vendors, were up to the usual high standards, once you got through the lines.  You want to selectively shop for the best lobster rolls. This year we found Captain [...]

2018-08-02T14:04:34-04:00August 2nd, 2018|Categories: Lifestyle|Comments Off on Volley Ball Tournament Heats Up on Carson Beach

By Richard Campbell Undaunted by the heat, and perhaps creating some heat themselves, Social Boston Sports drew a large group of players for their coed Beach Volleyball Tournament on Carson Beach this past Saturday, July 28th. Teams were formed in 6 versus 6, 4 versus 4 coed groupings and started around 2:00 pm in the bright sun, with some players looking like seasoned pros and others just showing for the fun of it. The tournament winners in the 6V6 category were Ric Flairs Woo’s! and the 4V4 winners were the Green Monkeys. Perhaps you’ve seen this group playing volleyball at Carson over the summer and wondered who they are? Social Sports has grown over the years from its humble beginnings in Baltimore of 16 members [...]

Review: TEMAZCAL (A Tequila Cantina)

2018-08-02T12:31:23-04:00July 26th, 2018|Categories: Lifestyle|Comments Off on Review: TEMAZCAL (A Tequila Cantina)

by Rick Winterson      It was early Thursday evening, July 12.  Whether it was the oncoming weekend or the leftover crowds from the week of the Fourth of July was impossible to say.  Whatever the reason, the lines into the restaurants along the Waterfront, specifically those with Harbor views or rooftop pavilions, were impossibly long.  Many places were simply letting small groups in with no regard for who was with whom.  And no prediction of estimated wait-time was given to those at the end of the lines. But inside TEMAZCAL (250 Northern Avenue, between the Fish Pier and the Blue Hills Bank Pavilion), a table became empty.  We were asked if seating along the Harbor Walk was OK.  We jumped at it, except that [...]

The Moms Club of South Boston hosted their Retro Luau Patio Party at Aloft Hotel Seaport District on Thursday, July 12th. Parents enjoyed live music, signature cocktails inspired by 1960 Hawaiian films and a custom tropical menu designed by the hotel’s head chef. The evening was held at the Hotel’s colorful and inviting, WXYZ bar, that features an expansive outdoor patio complete with a fireplace, lounge furniture and cornhole. Dedicated to its philanthropic work in Southie, the Mom’s Club partnered with Aloft to make this a truly memorable night by encouraging guests to bring school supplies to contribute to the annual South Boston Boys & Girls club back to school drive. Hotel Manager and South Boston Mom, Christy Loy, spoke to the hotels shared commitment [...]

2018-07-13T09:37:39-04:00July 13th, 2018|Categories: Featured, Lifestyle|Comments Off on Blue Man Group Contest Rocks Lawn on D

By Richard Campbell The site of a flash mob became Lawn on D when its festivities commenced this past Saturday, including more lawn games than usual, rock climbing, ice skating, giant collision space balls, and the fifth annual Blue Man Groups drumming contest for participants to get an opportunity to join the Blue Man Group in performance onstage. Tyler Peterson from Marblehead was the winner in a knock down drag out drumming battle between five participants, and also won over $6,000 in prizes that included a DW drum kit, Sabian cymbals, Vic Firth sticks- plus tickets and prizes from Blue Man Group. But perhaps the biggest win was being able to perform a piece called “Drum Finale Throwdown” with the famed Blue Men and Blue [...]

From the Dugout: M Street Softball League

2018-07-12T17:11:02-04:00July 12th, 2018|Categories: Featured, Lifestyle|Comments Off on From the Dugout: M Street Softball League

By Richard Campbell It was just cooling off this past Thursday night as the M Street League gathered for an amiable showdown at the edge of Medal of Honor Park.  The Silk Worms, coached by Dan Barzottini were facing Fat Baby, coached by Dave Piccirilli, and I would say they were fairly well matched in some respects, but the Fat Baby had the humor and the hits. Besting the Silk Worms 9-5, the scrappy Babies put on a show, and kept the small attending audience’s attention with side splitting one liners. The M Street League has 25 teams divided in two Divisions, with Lincoln Tavern 11-1 and City Tap House 10-1 at the top of their respective divisions, these two teams are the ones to [...]

LUXE-LEISURE – A DREAM REALIZED

2018-11-27T14:46:18-05:00June 29th, 2018|Categories: Lifestyle|Comments Off on LUXE-LEISURE – A DREAM REALIZED

By: Tara M. Kerrigan Hayes   One night, as long-term couple Christine Crevier and Chris Yang were discussing the future and life goals, they discovered they shared in the same dream of some day owning their own boutique. Unsure of what they were venturing into, they decided that with hard work, passion and dedication, they could realize their dream of doing what they love, together. That evening, they took a leap of faith and filed the paperwork for an LLC for Luxe Leisure. With little to no money to fund a business, they invested their entire savings (their down payment to purchase a home) to invest in merchandise for their store, created a business plan, and rolled the dice. In 2017 Christine and Chris were [...]

Not Pot for this Summer: Adolescent Brain Development 101

2018-06-29T09:40:19-04:00June 29th, 2018|Categories: Featured, Lifestyle|Comments Off on Not Pot for this Summer: Adolescent Brain Development 101

By Richard Campbell Now that the flood gates are about to open on the Massachusetts marijuana experiment, as a follow-up on Rick Winterson’s questions last week, it would be prudent to introduce some of the latest studies on the effects of the drug on the adolescent brain.  The one thing that should be remembered is that adolescent brains (particularly male adolescent brains) are not fully formed and the consequences of smoking pot at this stage in life are different from adult use in many ways.  Anyone who has read the literature will come to this conclusion.  From more “mild” effects, like partial cognition and memory impairment, to the extreme effects for adolescents with vulnerable genetic predisposition towards mental illnesses, the record is not very encouraging. Crossing the Centuries: Bridging Cultures At the UMASS Boston Campus Gallery

2018-06-15T10:23:48-04:00June 15th, 2018|Categories: Featured, Lifestyle|Comments Off on Crossing the Centuries: Bridging Cultures At the UMASS Boston Campus Gallery

By Richard Campbell Opening this week on the UMASS Boston campus is an interesting graduate work art show by Li Wang, who having returned from studying in Japan on a Ruth Butler scholarship, was influenced by works of traditional Asian artists. The beautiful creations this study inspired have an iconic and unique feeling to them- as though one is traveling back in time simultaneous to referencing current trends in art and iconography. The work is realized with particular skill and attention to detail, and well worth a visit. One of the critical aspects often missing in post-modern art is aesthetically pleasing work that entertains the viewer for its ingenuity that would make it personal art- art that one could purchase to display in a home [...]

Dalton and The Sheriffs Come to Southie

2018-06-07T14:14:47-04:00June 7th, 2018|Categories: Featured, Lifestyle|Comments Off on Dalton and The Sheriffs Come to Southie

by Rick Winterson      Country & Western in South Boston?  Why, certainly!  Every Tuesday night, that is. Plan a Tuesday drop in/hang out downstairs in the Supper Club at Capo Restaurant – 443 West Broadway, not very far from where Blinstrub’s sat for so many years.  Combine eating (varied Italian/American dishes), with drinking (inventive designer cocktails), and original C&W (“Dalton and The Sheriffs”).  And you know what?  At Capo, there’s no admission or cover.  Just show up Tuesday evenings and enjoy. Let’s mention that Dalton and The Sheriffs’ performances contain mostly their own original music, from half or more up to the entire gig, depending on the gig’s length and audience responses.  Why emphasize that fact?  Two reasons – because audiences consistently ask [...]
