Eastern Bank Business Appreciation Evening

2017-05-25T10:42:01-04:00May 25th, 2017|Categories: Featured, News|Comments Off on Eastern Bank Business Appreciation Evening

by Rick Winterson History counts. This year of 2017 is the 200th Anniversary of Eastern Bank, which is the largest mutual bank in New England, and which has a branch in Perkins Square at 470 West Broadway. In addition, May is Small Business Month. America’s small businesses have historically been the key source of job growth in the U.S., as well as becoming the seeds-and-roots of many high-technology global corporations. So it was fitting that South Boston’s Eastern Bank Branch had another of its Annual Business Appreciation Evenings, hostessed and emceed by Michele Hart, Vice President and Branch Manager. In addition to her professional accomplishments, Michele is a Southie resident, the wife of Jack Hart, and the mother of four daughters. Small businesses from all [...]

Patriots Week Festival Rocks Support of Armed Services

2017-07-20T16:58:27-04:00May 25th, 2017|Categories: Featured, Lifestyle, News|Comments Off on Patriots Week Festival Rocks Support of Armed Services

By Richard Campbell Massachusetts Fallen Heroes Patriot Week got a pretty fine kick off on Armed Forces Day this past Saturday, with a celebration on Lawn D in South Boston outside the Boston Convention Center. The 2nd annual Patriots Festival brought thousands of supporters who came to honor the fallen, Gold Star Families, troops in service, veterans, and naturally friends and family of all the troops. The headliners Tyler Farr and Eric Paslay bands were opened by a number of well-known local groups- each with their own distinctive styles- and then the headliners rocked young boisterous fans who sang out lyrics by heart well into the evening. The National Guard, Army, and Coast Guard, were the most visible service members with soldiers on hand. Some [...]

Mayra Rodriguez Retires

2017-05-25T10:26:30-04:00May 25th, 2017|Categories: Featured, News|Comments Off on Mayra Rodriguez Retires

by Rick Winterson Retirement parties are joyful celebrations – perhaps the single most joyful way to say “Goodbye” to a much-loved individual. Such was the gathering in the Seapoint Ballroom that celebrated the retirement of Mayra Rodriguez-Howard, one of South Boston’s many angels. Mayra was best known locally for her work at the South Boston Community Health Center (the SBCHC). Her creation, if you will – the Youth Ambassadors of South Boston. Her accomplishments are far too many to describe in just a few words, but you could see from the variety of well-wishers who showed up how much Mayra will be missed. There were her colleagues from the SBCHC, of course, especially Linda Doran. Activists like Helen Allix and Ed Flynn were on hand; [...]

Everything is Conceptual:

A Tour of Recent Works at ICA South Boston Seaport. By Richard Campbell As the South Boston Seaport is sprouting buildings and businesses at a maddening pace, it’s a good idea to review one of the pioneers of the Seaport renaissance, The Institute of Contemporary Art Museum. I’ll be the first to admit a lot of contemporary conceptual art strikes me as plain weird, but the current installations at the ICA have more gravitas than some of the works I’ve seen there in the past- and contain provocative pieces that are especially timely. The museum has a very friendly staff that interacts with patrons in an easy going way to bring out the stories of pieces by filling in details or pointing out aspects of [...]

JFK is Still Relevant: And Remembered on His 100th Anniversary

2017-05-25T10:12:02-04:00May 25th, 2017|Categories: Featured, News|Comments Off on JFK is Still Relevant: And Remembered on His 100th Anniversary

Richard Campbell This weekend to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of John F. Kennedy, the museum and library that bears his name is holding a series of events, some educational, some pure fun, and others in memorial. For the fading generation of World War II seniors, and their children, Kennedy left an indelible impression, from his fast ascendency as a young Senator to office of the president, to his tragically short lived term; it is both inspiring and heart breaking to know that world of dignity under pressure, and hope fill aspiration that was the new American century. The interest and admiration for the Kennedy legacy is not misplaced, for though there are detractors, anyone who has lived in Massachusetts within the past [...]

City of Boston Credit Union withdraws support Of South Boston St. Patrick’s Day Parade

2017-03-10T13:14:50-05:00March 10th, 2017|Categories: News|Comments Off on City of Boston Credit Union withdraws support Of South Boston St. Patrick’s Day Parade

City of Boston Credit Union is extremely saddened by the decision of the South Boston Allied War Veterans Council to deny the OUTVETS organization a place in this year’s South Boston St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The Credit Union was prepared to sponsor and participate in this year’s parade, however, with the unveiling of the Council’s vote this week to exclude this group of veterans the Credit Union is no longer considering sponsorship or participation. City of Boston Credit Union takes pride in working with community organizations that welcome all people, with no room for discrimination. As a gesture of respect and appreciation for the service and sacrifices of all veterans City of Boston Credit Union will donate the funds which were allocated for the parade [...]

There Is No Parade Vote Planned

2017-03-10T11:55:27-05:00March 10th, 2017|Categories: News|Comments Off on There Is No Parade Vote Planned

According to the leadership of the South Boston Allied War Veterans Council (the AWVC), there is NO Council vote planned concerning their recent decision not to permit OutVets to take part in the St. Patrick’s/Evacuation Day Parade on March 19 this year. That was explicitly and emphatically confirmed to South Boston Online a few minutes ago by the AWVC leadership. The AWVC has NOT scheduled a new vote to permit any group or groups to march in the 2017 Parade on March 19, either today (Friday, the 10th) or at any other time.

OutVets Denied Participation in 2017 Parade

2017-03-08T17:06:14-05:00March 8th, 2017|Categories: Business, News|Comments Off on OutVets Denied Participation in 2017 Parade

by Rick Winterson You have likely heard that some individuals have changed their minds, and have canceled their commitments to take part in the 2017 St. Patrick’s/Evacuation Day Parade on March 19. Their reason for boycotting the 2017 Parade was the decision by the South Boston Allied War Veterans Council not to let the OutVets group join the Parade this year. Members of the Allied War Veterans stated that the OutVets group submitted their Parade application late. The deadline is February 15; the OutVets themselves submitted their application on time last year and were admitted to the 2016 Parade. This year, the OutVets Parade application arrived late in February; in addition, there had been some violations of Parade rules in the past two Parades. At [...]

Safe Wheels for Sydni

2017-02-23T10:42:21-05:00February 23rd, 2017|Categories: News|Comments Off on Safe Wheels for Sydni

by Rick Winterson Last November 11, a fundraiser for Sydni Pecevich took place at the Murphy Rink. The occasion was her 12th birthday. Once she got there, Sydni actually skated for the very first time in her life. One reason for the party was to raise funds for a specially equipped van that can ferry Sydni, her wheelchair, and all her equipment around safely and comfortably. It was a joyful occasion, and a pleasure to write about in South Boston Online’s November 17 issue. The most joyful (and the brightest) part of Sydni’s entire 12th Birthday celebration was her own brilliant smile that flashed on non-stop the whole evening long. Well, her 12th Birthday Party was a great success. Sydni now has her van. Here’s [...]
