By KEVIN DEVLIN Justin Espinal is a reserved, polite young boy who is enjoying life and being a member of the South Boston Boys & Girls Club. Justin, 9, is the son of Solania and Aarron Espinal. He’s in the third grade at the William E. Russell Elementary School in Dorchester. His favorite subject is history and some day he plans on being a building contractor so he can build big, beautiful buildings and homes. Justin’s favorite color is orange and his favorite food is rice and chicken. In his leisure time, he enjoys playing with his iPad and toys at home and watching TV. By KEVIN DEVLIN On Monday evening, March 7, the annual Evacuation week free throw competition, sponsored by the South Boston Citizens’ Association and the Tynan Community Center, was held at the Tynan gymnasium. Tynan Program Supervisor Kathy Davis and her staff coordinated the event and Tynan Administrative Coordinator John Lydon photographed the event. Former mayor of Boston and ambassador to the Vatican Ray Flynn was present to help out, along with South Boston Citizens’ Association members Bernard O’Donnell and his son, Bernard. Parks and Recreation to hold final park, playground meeting

The Boston Parks and Recreation Department and the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services invite the public to the final in a series of meetings to discuss upcoming improvements to Medal of Honor Park & Lee Playground located at 775 East First St. The meeting will be at South Boston Catholic Academy at 866 East Broadway (please use the O Street entrance) on Wednesday, March 23, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The Parks Department is very interested in what the community has to contribute to the design process. Following a brief presentation, community members will be able to offer input regarding the material presented and the design process. For further information, please call 617-961-3025.

The South Boston Community Development Corporation and the Boston Redevelopment Authority hosted a neighborhood meeting on March 3 about the proposed elderly housing on an unused Boston Housing Authority lot on O’Connor Way. The 20 or so attendees included abutters and members of Andrew Square Civic Association, BHA and architects for the SBNDC. The project proposes 47 residence units. While there is no question that affordable housing, especially for the elderly, is a critical need in Boston, zoning exemptions and permissions will be required. The BRA’s comment period on this project ends, Friday, March 11. -Rick Winterson

The South Boston Community Health Center’s Youth Ambassadors are going on their eighth community service trip. This year’s trip will be to Detroit, Mich., where our youth will be doing disaster relief work. In August 2014, a large storm system moved across Michigan producing record rainfalls that caused severe flooding in over 128,000 homes in the greater Detroit area. While it was considered to be the largest domestic disaster of 2014, it was largely overlooked. As a result, the affected families, many of whom were already in an economically depressed state, are still struggling to make basic repairs to their homes nearly a year and a half after the floods.
