In defeating the defending champions, the Metro Energy Club won their ninth straight game and remains undefeated in regular season play. Only three games remain before the second season begins. Metro Energy Club Coach Billy Crowley is pleased with his young hoop warriors. “What I like about this team is that the older kids cheer on their younger teammates,” Crowley said. “My younger kids play the best defense and try so hard that they actually push the older kids to play smarter and harder that what they normally do. “As a team,” he concluded, “I love how all the kids talk to each other and try to give advice [...]

By RICK WINTERSON Certainly, Peter Welch’s Gym is a mecca for conditioning. Arguably, the boxing regimen creates some of the world’s most perfectly conditioned athletes. And that includes women, too: The membership numbers at PWG are about evenly split between guys and gals. Last Sunday was a big day at PWG. It was crowded and the workouts emphasizing body punching were underway. The guest of honor, the once welterweight champion Micky Ward from Lowell, came in around 12:30 p.m. He was there to demonstrate his body punching techniques, some of which involve coming in low and to the left on the torso, while avoiding the opponent’s quick jabs to the head. Ward has achieved well-deserved fame for his boxing courage and endurance. He’s a welterweight (approximately 140 pounds). He is one of the very few professional boxers to have fought in three consecutive Ring Magazine’s Fights of the Year – [...]

By KEVIN DEVLIN The American Football Conference Championship Game to be held Sunday in Denver is on everyone’s minds in Patriot Nation. Will our heroes prevail or lose to the dreaded Denver Broncos? Here’s what Southie residents think about this classic NFL matchup. “The Pat’s won’t lose to the Broncos. ‘Goodell’s Zebras’ might beat the Pats in Denver because Goodell would rather see the steroid freak win over the guy who took some air out of a football. It will be a hard hitting game. The team with the ball last will win. Gostkowski wins it with a clutch field goal. Patriots win 20-17.” (Calogero LoGrasso) “The Patriots will continue to work hard and play together as a team. Although Brady is certainly the leader, [...]
