  Tynan Youth League In Playoff Mode Summer is fast approaching and the youngsters will be out of school and ready to have fun. For those who love playing summer basketball, it also means participating in the Boston Neighborhood Basketball League (BNBL) which begins in early July. Mayor Martin Walsh, the Boston Parks and Recreation Department, and the Boston Centers for Youth and Families (BCYF) have announced that registration is open for the 47th annual BNBL season which begins on Tuesday, July 5. The BNBL is the oldest municipal basketball league in the country and is open to both girls and boys. On a monthly basis, the South Boston Neighborhood House, aka the Ollie, recognizes their youngsters by announcing two “Student Spotlight” winners. These young members are spotlighted for their good behavior, being kind, caring and considerate, being good students, as well as just being super kids overall. Roger Spring is one of the Ollie spotlight winners for May. Roger Spring, 11, is the son of Diana Jerzylo. He has two cats named Fuzzball and Oddball, and a snake named Craig. He’s in the fifth grade at the Condon Elementary School, his favorite subject is math, and someday he plans on being an architectural engineer. State Rep. Nick Collins recently joined his colleagues in the Massachusetts House of Representatives to skate in a charity ice hockey game to raise awareness of veteran’s suicide, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and other mental health issues stemming from service. The game was organized by the Skate 22 Foundation, a Massachusetts based advocacy organization which raises awareness of the struggles that many veterans face upon returning home. Their mission is to provide support, ice time, and skating equipment to veterans at no cost. They also organize volunteers to fundraise and participate in veterans outreach programs. Last weekend in South Boston there was plenty of energy being expended on the playing fields and in the gyms, as youngsters played in softball, baseball and basketball games. By MARIELLA COLLINS The 2016 South Boston Girls Softball League (SBGSL) season is underway. Established in 2007, the SBGSL is a registered Amateur Softball Association (ASA) organization that continues to provide mentorship and competitive play for hundreds of girls and young women ages five through 17 in the South Boston area and neighboring communities. The SBGSL offers house league programs at the eight and under, instructional, 10 and under, 12 and under, and 14 and under levels during the spring season. Southie Stars win state title

By KEVIN DEVLIN On Sunday, May 15, at the Kingston Sports Complex, the South Boston Stars defeated the RABC from Rhode Island, 49-33, to capture the Zero Gravity Division III state championship. The Stars played three games on Saturday, May 14, at the Boston Basketball Club in Waltham. In the opening tilt, they defeated Middlesex Magic, 57-45. Next game, they cruised to victory against the Bay State Flash, 61-31. In the final game on Saturday, the local entry defeated the New England Playaz, 50-18. On Sunday, the team traveled to Kingston. In the semi-final game, the Stars played the New England Longhorns and won, 63-45. Jake Harrison netted 30 points and Marc Iannaco scored 27 points. Boston Neighborhood Soccer League will play at Moakley Park

The Boston Parks and Recreation Department has announced that registration is now open for the 2016 Boston Neighborhood Soccer League (BNSL). This five-week 6 v 6 league offers young soccer players ages 8 to 14 the opportunity to compete against each other and develop their skills.  The program divisions include co-ed 8 to 10, co-ed 10 to 12, boys 14 and under, and girls 14 and under. This year, with support from the US Soccer Foundation, BNSL will expand to four sites: Almont Park in Mattapan; LoPresti Park in East Boston; Millennium Park in West Roxbury; and Moakley Park in South Boston. By KEVIN DEVLIN On Sunday, May 15, the Special Kids and Young Adults program held their annual bowling banquet at the South Boston Yacht Club. The bowlers were presented with prizes and then treated to a buffet that also included their favorite ice cream dishes. It was a great time and everyone left with smiles on their faces. Cheryl Flaherty who takes the lead in this endeavor was pleased that the season was another success for all involved.
