By RICK WINTERSON On With Living and Learning (OWLL) brings together underrepresented women and girls with teaching artists and human service professionals. Leadership workshops result in theater performances that focus on social justice issues. These serve as passageways to transforming and developing a community’s future. Mary Driscoll, the founder of On With Living and Learning. (Photo by Rick Winterson) OWLL was founded by Fort Point’s Mary Driscoll. A recent performance of “Humanity not Statistics”, written by Mary and directed by Tasia O. Jones, took place in a novel site – the Tropical Forest Pavilion at the Franklin Park Zoo. This was a staged reading, in collaboration with Sisterhood on the Move and Samuel Hurtado of South Boston en Accion, in memory of Marvin [...]

Community members gather to learn about proposed Starbucks

2016-04-27T14:08:23-04:00April 27th, 2016|Categories: News|Tags: |Comments Off on Community members gather to learn about proposed Starbucks

The crowd outside of 749 East Broadway (northwest corner of its intersection with L Street) early Monday evening was awaiting a meeting with the owner of a proposed new Starbucks at that location. Four Starbucks are located in South Boston now: three on the Waterfront and one at 11 West Broadway by Broadway Station. Ten or more other coffee shops are already located a few blocks from the L and Broadway intersection. In general, those gathered were firmly against opening a Starbucks there, due to potential traffic problems, a lack of neighborhood notification, and no perceived need for yet another coffee shop. No license has been granted yet. That’ll tentatively take place in City Hall on the morning of May 4. -Rick Winterson

Patriot’s Day honored at local schools with aid from historical society

2016-04-20T14:47:29-04:00April 20th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Tags: |Comments Off on Patriot’s Day honored at local schools with aid from historical society

By RICK WINTERSON You might well ask how we observe Patriots Day in South Boston. It is one of the most important historical dates in Boston’s history – the start of the American Revolution, Paul Revere’s ride, the Lexington Minutemen, and “the shot that was heard around the world” at the Old North Bridge in Concord. This year of 2016 saw the 120th running of the Boston Marathon – world famous and better than ever. The Red Sox played Monday morning (though they lost to the Blue Jays). Lexington, Concord, and all the minuteman towns had huge celebrations on Monday (except for Sudbury’s rock-ribbed traditionalists, who insist upon the actual date of April 19). The swan boats hit the water in the Public Garden for [...]

Springtime shoppers stroll along Broadway

2016-04-20T14:42:49-04:00April 20th, 2016|Categories: Business|Tags: |Comments Off on Springtime shoppers stroll along Broadway

By RICK WINTERSON The Spring Stroll has become another South Boston tradition. It is centered upon the merchants, enterprises and purveyors of refreshments along Broadway. But as you’ll recall, South Boston Online focused the lead article in our April 7 issue on residential developments along West Broadway. Well, the rapid development of shops and businesses along West Broadway is equally astonishing, so we are focusing on that in this issue. New businesses range from the South Boston Arts Association’s (the SBAA’s) charming new “Around the Corner” Gallery to a major opening last Thursday: the Fairway Independent Mortgage Corporation.  Check out their “core values” prominently displayed just inside their door. The SBAA Gallery is just around the corner from Neatly Nested, a design and furnishings shop [...]

2016-04-21T10:41:50-04:00April 20th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Tags: |Comments Off on Educating for success: Annual fundraiser supports Notre Dame Education Center

“Educating for Success” is the theme of South Boston’s Notre Dame Education Center spring fundraiser. The guest of honor is Jim Fowkes. The event is Thursday evening, May 5, at The Venezia in the Port Norfolk neighborhood, with its superb dining and stunning views where the Neponset river estuary meets the sea. By RICK WINTERSON This article contains an implied challenge: It must deliver a welcoming message to South Boston’s many newcomers, as well as reminding longtime residents that a much-anticipated event is at hand. The event is the Notre Dame Education Center’s Annual Spring Fundraiser; it takes place Thursday, May 5, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Visit ndecboston.org or call 617-268-1912 for tickets. The party’s site will be The Venezia Waterfront Restaurant, where that [...]

DeLeo receives ‘Leadership in Recovery’ award

2016-04-13T14:58:21-04:00April 13th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Tags: |Comments Off on DeLeo receives ‘Leadership in Recovery’ award

By RICK WINTERSON A remarkable cast of characters assembled at the Cronin Group’s headquarters for a double-barreled event on the Waterfront last Thursday evening. It was remarkable because of the extremely positive roles they all play in recovery from drug abuse and addiction. The four leading players were Speaker of the Massachusetts House of Representatives Robert DeLeo, the recipient of the first Martin J. Walsh “Leadership in Recovery” Award; Walsh, himself in recovery and presenter of the award named for him; Andy Ward, director of the South Boston Collaborative, the recovery organization that founded this award; and Jon Cronin, president of the Cronin Group, who hosted this celebration and who is a devoted supporter of recovery efforts and programs. It was an all-star cast. Cronin opened [...]

Sr. Maryadele to be honored with service award

2016-04-13T14:58:00-04:00April 13th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Tags: |Comments Off on Sr. Maryadele to be honored with service award

Please plan to be at John Hancock Financial’s striking fourth floor atrium (601 Congress St. in South Boston’s Seaport District) on Thursday, April 28, 5 to 8:30 p.m. The occasion: the 34th Laboure Spring Reception. Sr. Maryadele Robinson and her three decades devoted to Laboure will be recognized with the 2016 Jack Shaughnessy Service Award. It’ll be an evening of fun and fellowship. By RICK WINTERSON It was an interview very typical of Sr. Maryadele Robinson, the director of South Boston’s Laboure Center, a service site of Catholic Charities. When asked how she felt about receiving this year’s service award, which is named for philanthropist Jack Shaughnessy, she immediately began to talk about how much Jack had done, both for Laboure and for the whole South [...]

New commanding officer named to South Boston police district

2016-04-13T14:31:57-04:00April 13th, 2016|Categories: Happenings, News|Tags: |Comments Off on New commanding officer named to South Boston police district

By RICK WINTERSON Each of the Boston Police Department’s stations hold regular meetings with local media and representatives of the various civic associations. These are called Neighborhood Advisory Council (NAC) meetings. South Boston’s station C-6 is no exception; the most recent NAC Meeting took place on Tuesday, April 6. The headline item was the succession of BPD Capt. Joseph Boyle to command Station C-6, replacing Capt. John Greland, who has been assigned to BPD Headquarters. Boyle is a comparatively young looking commander, who speaks in a quiet manner, but he is clearly in charge. He has 22 years on the force, much of it spent on assignments downtown and in Mattapan. He also worked for four years here in South Boston. Welcome back to South [...]

‘In the Eye of the Beholder:’ Creative fashions at Midway Studios

2016-04-13T14:31:13-04:00April 13th, 2016|Categories: Business|Tags: |Comments Off on ‘In the Eye of the Beholder:’ Creative fashions at Midway Studios

By RICK WINTERSON It is an eclectic exhibition entitled “In the Eye of the Beholder” that opened at Midway Studios (15 Channel Center in South Boston’s Fort Point neighborhood) last week. There are colorful abstracts, collages and wall installations, all of them worth a more-than-passing glance. But the most striking part of the overall displays is the uniquely designed fashions – both practical and, well, a bit impractical (to select a word). These wearable fashions – true works of art ¬– reminded one of the larger and heavily advertised (but no more striking) exhibition of fashion, “#techstyle,” now being shown at the Museum of Fine Arts. (The MFA’s exhibit opened last month and runs through mid-July.) The message here is for you to take a pleasant [...]

Perry School Rocks: A real ‘Southie time’

2016-04-13T14:30:15-04:00April 13th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Tags: |Comments Off on Perry School Rocks: A real ‘Southie time’

By RICK WINTERSON It’s fundraising season in South Boston: the time after the St. Patrick’s Day and Evacuation Day festivities are over, and set right in the middle of the so-called gifting season. And these fundraisers are great “Southie times.” You know the motto: “Do well by doing good, and have a great time doing it.” It works. Well, that was certainly true of the Oliver Hazard Perry School’s fundraising party, “Perry School Rocks,” last Saturday. Fortunately, it wasn’t raining (or snowing!) because they raised the roof inside Seapoint’s Banquet Room on Eighth Street. The Perry, a K-8 elementary institution, is the only school in South Boston with a seaside location, they’ll have you know. This fundraiser is for activities such as field trips, as well [...]
