Local property prices continue to climb

2016-02-03T13:54:22-05:00February 3rd, 2016|Categories: Real Estate|Comments Off on Local property prices continue to climb

Property prices in South Boston - a neighborhood that has seen a boom in development in recent years - have nearly doubled in less than 15 years. The median sales price of a South Boston property in 2015 was $599,000, according to The Warren Group. In 2002, the median price was $300,000. The 2015 year-end information from The Warren Group, a company that “compiles data on real estate sales and ownership throughout New England,” was recently released, demonstrating that the trend of rising value continues. In 2009, the median price for a property in South Boston was $354,500. Since that year, prices have increased by at least 3 percent. The increase in median sales price from 2014 to 2015 – 13.88 percent – is the [...]

Letter to the editor: Quitting is not an option

As someone who worked in the mental health field for almost 41 years and as a police officer for the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health for 27.5 of those years, I see the ongoing overdose crisis as indeed a crisis. The latest in a series of pieces in the South Boston Online: You are right, it is much more than an issue, it is an epidemic or plague and it is killing too many of our folks, especially young people. I have written on this situation several times recently in my weekly commentary in the Charlestown Patriot-Bridge. We can't wish it away or say it is a problem for someone else not us. Sadly, by now this drug issue has impacted so many folks, so [...]

Drug series article No. 17: Addressing the ongoing crisis

This is No. 17 in South Boston Online’s series about drug use, abuse and addiction. The numbers are tragic. It is time to make a 2016 New Year resolution about the crucial issue of heroin - and we are being kind when we call it “an issue.” It’s at least an epidemic - more like an old-fashioned plague (deadlier than Ebola). You can help. Don’t let this continue. By RICK WINTERSON In his State of the Commonwealth speech last Thursday, Gov. Charlie Baker spoke eloquently about how dull his governing might seem, since he’s devoting his time to fixing things in the commonwealth – “minding the store.” But he made a key, specific point of singling out opioid abuse as a highly important issue. Baker [...]

2016-02-05T16:02:18-05:00January 27th, 2016|Categories: News|Tags: |Comments Off on The first substantial snowfall: A look before and after

Snow quickly accumulated during last week’s storm, so South Boston Online decided to capture the results in before and after images. Top: Andrew Square (looking across to the Southampton Street Bridge) was almost socked in with a heavy snowfall Saturday evening, even though Dunkin’ Donuts bravely kept its lights on. Bottom: On Sunday morning, the Dorchester Street/West Broadway intersection (looking toward the Kelly Bridge) was clear and sunny down to the pavement. Nice job, everyone. -Rick Winterson

South Boston’s Michael Bolstad: Bound for Brown University

2016-02-05T16:03:42-05:00January 27th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Comments Off on South Boston’s Michael Bolstad: Bound for Brown University

By KEVIN DEVLIN Michael Bolstad is definitely a mild, mannered young man, shy, and modest to a fault. He has focused on working hard with the goal of being accepted to a good school. And his dream paid off. He recently received an early acceptance letter and will be attending Brown University next fall. “I was shocked,” he said. “My mom was excited and started crying. She was proud at the same time as tears were streaming down her face. I’m excited to go…can’t wait.” Michael’s a senior at the Boston Collegiate Charter School (BCCS) in Dorchester. He’s currently taking four AP classes: government, environmental science, calculus and literature. He’s obviously an Honor Roll student, and although he doesn’t exactly know what he wants to [...]
