But it must be remembered, not just as a time to relax and cook a couple of steaks on the barbecue, but as a time to reflect upon those who sacrificed their lives throughout history. Fitzgerald Post #561 of South Boston, visited several cemeteries throughout Boston to place American flags in front of each headstone of a military veteran. This time honored tradition, ensures each veteran is remembered and honored, as we also reflect on Memorial Day in our country. We were touched to see the determination of Sister Lois Connors and Sister Florence Kahler (Sisters of Saint Joseph), join other volunteers in walking the hallowed grounds of New Calvary Cemetery in Mattapan and St. Joseph Cemetery in West Roxbury, seeking the names of veterans to properly place an American flag at the gravesite. By KEVIN DEVLIN The Team Opportunity Foundation held a fundraiser at Carson Place on Saturday, May 14. Hundreds of people attended to support this new endeavor and had a great time seeing old friends and dancing to the music supplied by well-known DJ, Dru Errico. The drug epidemic has worsened and local resident Thomas McCarthy, was devastated by what he has witnessed. But this devastation turned into inspiration for McCarthy, inspiration to found the Team Opportunity pilot program, a one-to-two year plan in a very structured environment offering an intense, 12-step program. If you’re looking for some good, inexpensive items, you can find them at the Old Colony Housing Development yard sale. Every Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. until 4p.m., weather permitting, Old Colony residents volunteer to sell items to benefit the Old Colony (aka the OC) teen and senior center. By KEVIN DEVLIN On a monthly basis, the South Boston Neighborhood House (the Ollie) recognizes their youngsters by announcing two “Student Spotlight” winners. These young members are recognized for their good behavior, kindness, caring and consideration, as well as being super kids overall. Alexis Llewellyn is one of the student spotlight winners for April. Alexis, 7, is the daughter of Paul Llewellyn and Kim Reeves. She has two brothers, Patrick and Paul. She also has a white, brown and black cat named Red Sox and a Yorkshire terrier puppy named Charlie. Alexis is in the first grade at the Condon Elementary School in South Boston. Her favorite subject is dance. Someday she plans on being a cheerleader or a veterinarian. Her favorite food is pizza [...]
