You (Yes, You!) Can Make History

2016-06-03T13:47:24-04:00June 3rd, 2016|Categories: Lifestyle|Tags: |Comments Off on You (Yes, You!) Can Make History

Would it interest you to make history? If so, please consider volunteering for the Castle Island Association (the other CIA), the volunteer organization that operates the activities within Fort Independence – guided tours (summer weekend afternoons), sunset viewings (summer Thursday evenings), and an annual gala Halloween Party. First, a few historic facts: The first of eight successive forts on Castle Island was built in 1634, four years after the Puritans settled Boston. Fort Independence was originally called Fort William, and it was on an island, later known as “Castle Island”. Even later, Castle Island was connected to South Boston by a bridge, a causeway, and then a full-fledged road (Day Boulevard). Please be aware that volunteering for the Castle Island Association involves no heavy lifting. [...]

Collins Laces Up for Veterans

2016-06-03T13:53:06-04:00June 3rd, 2016|Categories: Sports|Comments Off on Collins Laces Up for Veterans

State Rep. Nick Collins recently joined his colleagues in the Massachusetts House of Representatives to skate in a charity ice hockey game to raise awareness of veteran’s suicide, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and other mental health issues stemming from service. The game was organized by the Skate 22 Foundation, a Massachusetts based advocacy organization which raises awareness of the struggles that many veterans face upon returning home. Their mission is to provide support, ice time, and skating equipment to veterans at no cost. They also organize volunteers to fundraise and participate in veterans outreach programs. The name of the organization comes from the 22 veterans who lose their lives every day to mental health and other service related issues upon returning home from service. “I [...]

Memorial Weekend, 2016

2016-06-03T12:30:12-04:00June 3rd, 2016|Categories: News|Tags: |Comments Off on Memorial Weekend, 2016

Memorial Day observances in South Boston actually stretched over four days, making it into a very full weekend of remembrance. This is appropriate: Memorial Day (originally called “Decoration Day”) began 150 years ago in Waterloo in upstate New York – a key stop on the North’s Underground Railway. On Friday morning, the Fallen Heroes (Iraq, Afghanistan) Memorial was dedicated on a plot of ground within John Hynes’ Seaport Square mega-development. This Memorial consists of a simple but stately pentagonal obelisk, representing the five American combat arms. At its base, there’s a reflecting pool and steps, in and around which bright flowers were left. The Fallen Heroes Memorial is a result of dedicated volunteer efforts by local firefighters, police officers, Gold Star families, and veterans. One [...]

“Business Spring Fling” at Eastern Bank

2016-06-03T13:52:35-04:00June 3rd, 2016|Categories: Business, Happenings|Tags: |Comments Off on “Business Spring Fling” at Eastern Bank

It was simultaneously an event, a reception, and a celebration at the South Boston Branch of Eastern Bank last Wednesday evening, May 25.  Specifically, it was an evening to pay tribute to the strength of small businesses all across America – both locally and nationwide.  May is “Small Business Month”; Mayor Walsh had previously paid tribute to the strength of Boston’s small businesses by publicly stating that they provide 170,000 jobs in the City of Boston.  It was a real “Small Business Spring Fling”. In the commendably brief program, Eastern Bank Branch Manager Michele Hart welcomed her guests.  She reflected back on the six years she has served as Eastern Bank’s South Boston Branch Manager, focusing on the value of small businesses here, and [...]

The Lawn on D opens for its third season

2016-05-25T12:09:45-04:00May 25th, 2016|Categories: News|Tags: |Comments Off on The Lawn on D opens for its third season

By RICK WINTERSON It’s time for compliments, resulting from the opening day of the Lawn on D on Saturday, May 21, for the summer of 2016. But the biggest compliment that can be paid to the Lawn on D is the presence of the crowd that more than eagerly anticipated the lawn’s first day of its summer season. Families came and went, but it seemed that 500 or more were on hand for the entire time. Equal numbers of adults and kids mobbed the Lawn on D’s patented crescent swings – selfies were encouraged. The youngsters enjoyed a bubble bath filled with light plastic balls. They jumped onto and then rode inflatables of all kinds. There were miniature houses, crawl spaces, and hidey-holes everywhere. Creative [...]

South Boston Collaborative Center will honor two citizens at awards night

2016-05-25T12:09:10-04:00May 25th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Tags: |Comments Off on South Boston Collaborative Center will honor two citizens at awards night

By RICK WINTERSON The South Boston Collaborative Center, located where the Washington Village Branch Library once was at 1226A Columbia Road, is a pillar of South Boston. Briefly stated, the Collaborative lends a hand – both professionally and compassionately – to anyone in the throes of an addiction, whether it’s from drugs, alcohol, prescription medicines, or any other form of substance abuse. What’s most important of all, the Collaborative renders its services confidentially and anonymously. The Collaborative was founded almost 20 years ago, in 1997. This was in response to an epidemic of teen suicides related to drug abuse at that time. And the Collaborative was successful. But to succeed, an effort like the Collaborative needs the work and support of many community members. Every [...]

Cyclists return from fundraising ride to Florida

2016-05-25T12:08:46-04:00May 25th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Comments Off on Cyclists return from fundraising ride to Florida

Thomas Regan and Mark Delamere are in front of the map that plotted out the progress of the fundraising cyclists – Tom Regan, Michael Kineavy and Tim Connolly – which South Boston Online reported on in our last issue. Well, the riders made it all the way to Florida (look closely at the trail of thumbtacks that breaks the Florida border at Jacksonville). They completed their more than 1,000 mile odyssey Sunday afternoon, May 22, and got back to South Boston Monday night. They started their ride from South Boston on May 12. “I’m really proud of them,” Delamere said. Details of their epic ride will follow – stay tuned. George LoCascio brings a touch of Italy to the Ollie seniors

2016-05-25T12:25:52-04:00May 25th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Comments Off on George LoCascio brings a touch of Italy to the Ollie seniors

Does stuffed sausage ravioli and capreze salad bring a smile to your face, along with images of your favorite Italian restaurant? Well, that’s what Papa George did for the seniors at the South Boston Neighborhood House Senior Center. Papa George – also known as our favorite “yes” man “George LoCasio” – brought his knowledge and expertise direct from Italy by hosting a cooking demonstration and luncheon here at the center. While cooking, George entertained the seniors with marvelous stories of his ventures in Italy where he learned to cook from chef Biago Longo in Sorrento, Italy, and chef Nora Chimirri in Syracuse, Sicily. The Ollie seniors enjoyed a fabulous day starting with homemade lemoncello, and tomato with mozzarella and basil, followed by homemade garlic bread.  [...]
