On March 31, the early childhood students at South Boston Catholic Academy had a visit from the New England Aquarium’s “Tide Pools Alive” Program. Michael from the New England Aquarium told us about how tide pools are formed and brought some of the small sea animals that are found in tide pools. During this visit, the children were able to look, touch and explore animals that live in a tide pool. The children also had the opportunity to dress up in costumes provided through the program and act out what it is like to live in such an ecosystem. We want to thank Michael and the New England Aquarium for such a fun and informative visit! Together the preschool and K1 programs are continuously working [...]

2016-03-16T14:22:31-04:00March 16th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Tags: |Comments Off on South Boston Catholic Academy students study animals

Over the past few months, these high achieving students in the Exceptional Learner Program at South Boston Catholic Academy have been working on an inquiry-based project to answer the question: Can these animals live in South Boston? After finding out what their animal eats and drinks, the climate it needs, and other key components to survival, the students made trifold posters and iPad presentations to teach about their animal. If the animal could not live in South Boston, the students had to think critically of adaptations they could make so the animal could live here. The students came up with very creative ideas, so do not be surprised if you see some unusual animals wandering around in South Boston! South Boston Catholic Academy is currently [...]

Thank you to all of the wonderful Junior Achievement volunteers from State Street Bank who recently visited South Boston Catholic Academy. The students in K2 were fortunate to be the youngest participants of a visit from the Junior Achievement program of State Street Corporation. They learned how even young children can save their money and spend it wisely.  They were also introduced to entrepreneurship and how they can come up with some ideas to make a profit.  Through hands on activities, the concept of working for others and getting paid for their job was discussed.  Junior Achievement volunteers are to be commended for their dedication to school age students. The first-graders enjoyed their visit with David and Diane from State Street on Junior Achievement Day. [...]

The classrooms at South Boston Catholic Academy are a bit more spirited thanks to a large grant project from the school’s Spirit Committee. The Spirit Committee, pioneered and led by a group of parents, is a group of volunteers that organize community building activities for SBCA students and their families. This year, the committee hosted the Halloween Dances, Pizza with Santa, and Family Bingo nights. Using the profits from recent events, grants were provided to the faculty to purchase out-of-the-box, innovative and engaging experiences for students that would enhance learning across the school. Grant recipients were able to use the money to fund several projects: The Early Childhood Program is bringing “Tidepools Alive” to their classroom through the New England Aquarium. Using guided imagery, a child-size [...]
