It’s always a pleasure to welcome a new business to South Boston.  We live in a growing, thriving neighborhood with plenty of room for opportunity.  The new enterprise we are “Making It Our BUSINESS” to report on this week is MAXIM Pharmacy.  MAXIM is located at 267 Old Colony Avenue, where it intersects with Dorchester Street (617-268-4500; info@maximpharmacy.com). The Pharmacy Manager and owner of MAXIM is Hieu B. Vinh, R. Ph. (for Registered   Pharmacist).  He of course takes the integrity with which he fills his prescriptions as his most important responsibility.  You are in good hands with him.  Hieu also prides himself on the service he renders to his customers, which he calls “Full Service”. Service can mean something small but important.  For example, MAXIM [...]

2016-07-20T14:43:49-04:00July 20th, 2016|Categories: Business, Featured|Tags: |Comments Off on SPOTLIGHT: Dawnmarie Salmons, Boys & Girls Club Music Director

You perhaps saw the recent “Music Parade”, which played and marched on Friday, July 15, from the Boys & Girls Clubhouse on Sixth Street down West Broadway to the Boston Police Department’s Station C-6.  It was quite an event – the creation of Dawnmarie Salmons, the Music Director at South Boston’s Boys & Girls Club.  The event was evidence of Dawnmarie’s love of music and her ability to think “outside the box”. Dawnmarie is a local young lady.  She was brought up in the Clam Point neighborhood of Dorchester and went to the Boston Arts Academy.  Her first key encounter with music took place at an early age; it was both memorable and transformative.  Dawnmarie was in the fourth grade when a high school [...]

Tuesday morning, July 12, Eastern Bank (located at 470 West Broadway) rendered some very substantial support to the South Boston community. Shown in front of the bank are South Boston’s Eastern Bank Branch Manager Michele Hart and Eastern Bank Vice President Bob Foy (l.).  They are presenting a $10,000 check to the Laboure Center at D and West Broadway.   Receiving this check are recently-appointed Laboure Executive Director Jake Bombard and Sr. Maryadele Robinson, who is starting up Laboure’s “Recovery Connections Program”, modeled upon the efforts of the still-mourned Jack Leary. That same day, both John McGahan, President of the Gavin Foundation, and Bob Monahan, Executive Director of Julie’s Family Learning Program, also each received $10,000 checks from Eastern Bank to support their much-valued programs.    It was simultaneously an event, a reception, and a celebration at the South Boston Branch of Eastern Bank last Wednesday evening, May 25.  Specifically, it was an evening to pay tribute to the strength of small businesses all across America – both locally and nationwide.  May is “Small Business Month”; Mayor Walsh had previously paid tribute to the strength of Boston’s small businesses by publicly stating that they provide 170,000 jobs in the City of Boston.  It was a real “Small Business Spring Fling”. In the commendably brief program, Eastern Bank Branch Manager Michele Hart welcomed her guests.  She reflected back on the six years she has served as Eastern Bank’s South Boston Branch Manager, focusing on the value of small businesses here, and [...]

East Boston Savings Bank business breakfast celebrates bank, city, local businesses

2016-05-18T13:45:56-04:00May 18th, 2016|Categories: Business|Tags: |Comments Off on East Boston Savings Bank business breakfast celebrates bank, city, local businesses

By RICK WINTERSON On Tuesday morning, May 17, East Boston Savings Bank added another chapter to what has become a tradition in South Boston and beyond – well beyond. Some years ago, before its consolidation with EBSB, Ed Merritt of the then Mt. Washington Bank began having business breakfasts that informed the local business public of the bank’s progress during the past year. Dick Gavegnano, the chairman, president and CEO of EBSB, liked what Merritt was doing and decided to continue this tradition after EBSB merged with Mt. Washington. The Venezia Restaurant in Port Norfolk on the Neponset River estuary was the business breakfast’s 2016 locale. Venezia is located centrally to the many branches that EBSB now has in various business and customer centers around [...]

Cinco de Mayo in South Boston

2016-05-11T15:30:42-04:00May 11th, 2016|Categories: Business, Happenings|Tags: |Comments Off on Cinco de Mayo in South Boston

At 634 East Broadway, Wears + Wares is a fairly recent addition to South Boston’s Broadway scene (there’s a kind of friendly rivalry as to whether East or West Broadway becomes “Big” Broadway in the future. May the “Best” Broadway win). Nikole Roome and Clodagh Fitzharris put on a Cinco de Mayo evening last Thursday at Wears + Wares, complete with margaritas and guacamole, to kick off the weekend leading up to Mother’s Day. This was a joint event with Nurture, The Sun Tan Van and Lashes by Clo. Has a new South Boston tradition started? -Rick Winterson

Proposed South Boston Starbucks rejected

2016-05-05T17:39:17-04:00May 5th, 2016|Categories: Business, Happenings|Comments Off on Proposed South Boston Starbucks rejected

South Boston will not soon have another Starbucks Coffee. The city's licensing board unanimously rejected the license for a Starbucks proposed for the corner of L Street and East Broadway on Thursday morning. Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh "was also opposed due to the lack of neighborhood support," wrote a spokesperson for the mayor in an email Thursday. The proposed Starbucks was for a property at 749 East Broadway. Michael Norton owns the property. According to numerous articles, there was much opposition this week to the proposed Starbucks. Last week, community members gathered at the location, South Boston Online reported: "In general, those gathered were firmly against opening a Starbucks there, due to potential traffic problems, a lack of neighborhood notification, and no perceived need for yet [...]

By RICK WINTERSON The Artists for Humanity’s EpiCenter will expand by more than twice its current size in less than two years, the South Boston center, city officials and private business leaders announced Monday morning. The reception to announce the expanded EpiCenter Building on A and Second Streets was a joyful celebration. Susan Rodgerson, the founder and executive/artistic director of Artists for Humanity, was the hostess. The expansion is expected to start with groundbreaking this fall; completion is slated for the end of 2017. The South Boston organization “is a national leader in youth arts enterprise whose mission is to bridge economic, racial, and social divisions by providing under-resourced urban youth with the keys to self-sufficiency through paid employment in art and design,” a press [...]
