Synthetic marijuana: What parents need to know and tell their kids

2018-11-27T13:06:37-05:00January 20th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Comments Off on Synthetic marijuana: What parents need to know and tell their kids

By KEVIN DEVLIN The legalization of marijuana, a consideration currently being studied by a group of state senators, is a topic that consistently garners plenty of attention. But synthetic marijuana, an altogether different substance, is a separate matter. Synthetic cannabis - or what is technically synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists - are ‘designer drugs’ which mimic the effect of marijuana sprayed onto a herbal-base material. Synthetic cannabis is commonly known as K2 and Spice, but have a myriad of brand names such as Ivory, Ocean Snow, Black Mamba, Purple Haze, Bliss, and Bombay Blue, to name just a few. It is much more powerful than marijuana and highly dangerous. Synthetic cannabis first went on sale in the early 2000s. You can buy it in a convenience [...]

2016-01-20T16:30:21-05:00January 20th, 2016|Categories: Featured, Happenings|Comments Off on Walsh delivers second State of the City address

By ELAINE FALLON Mayor Martin J. Walsh delivered his second State of the City speech (SOTC 16) on Tuesday evening, Jan. 19, in Symphony Hall. While acknowledging the many problems that the city of Boston still faces, the mayor was still emphatically upbeat. Progress in our city has ranged from reductions in crime, homicides and unemployment to the recent news about General Electric’s relocation to the South Boston waterfront. Symphony Hall was an ideal venue for SOTC 16. The acoustics in Boston’s historic cultural center are unmatched; the decor inside Symphony Hall is an ever-present reminder of the city’s heritage. Keith Lockhart of the Boston Pops remarked that music halls have historically served as gathering places for communities throughout the centuries. And the SOTC 16 [...]

State of the arts: South Boston in 2016

2016-02-05T16:16:31-05:00January 20th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Tags: |Comments Off on State of the arts: South Boston in 2016

By RICK WINTERSON South Boston Online published several articles and photo essays on the themes, music, decorations, and seasonal creations over the holidays. And the beat of South Boston’s art scene still goes on in 2016. This issue hit the street just after the middle of January and many local art news items continue to flow in. Make it a point to visit the South Boston Branch Library. The library has the prints of Harold Cunniff, who is the Branch Library’s Artist of the Month. Look at the use of colors in his prints, which combine into a triad on the color wheel that is both eye-catching and subdued. He’s also a member of the SBAA (the South Boston Arts Association). Speaking of the SBAA, the group held a Plenary Meeting one Saturday this month. It is the New Year, of course, meaning that a [...]

Predicting a Patriots victory: Southie residents preview the AFC Championship Game

2016-02-05T16:34:51-05:00January 20th, 2016|Categories: Happenings, Sports|Comments Off on Predicting a Patriots victory: Southie residents preview the AFC Championship Game

By KEVIN DEVLIN The American Football Conference Championship Game to be held Sunday in Denver is on everyone’s minds in Patriot Nation. Will our heroes prevail or lose to the dreaded Denver Broncos? Here’s what Southie residents think about this classic NFL matchup. “The Pat’s won’t lose to the Broncos. ‘Goodell’s Zebras’ might beat the Pats in Denver because Goodell would rather see the steroid freak win over the guy who took some air out of a football. It will be a hard hitting game. The team with the ball last will win. Gostkowski wins it with a clutch field goal. Patriots win 20-17.” (Calogero LoGrasso) “The Patriots will continue to work hard and play together as a team. Although Brady is certainly the leader, [...]

By SUSAN DOUCET Boston was a city of significance for the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., local politicians, activists and leaders reminded attendees at the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Memorial Breakfast on Monday. King studied here, preached here, led peaceful protests on Boston Common, and met with local leaders and officials, Boston Mayor Martin Walsh said during the breakfast. This is where King met his wife, state Sen. Sonia Chang-Diaz said. “Dr. King had a special relationship with our city, Boston,” Chang-Diaz said during the 46th annual MLK Breakfast at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center on Monday morning. “And that is why I believe it would pain him to look down on us from Heaven and see what the Brookings (Institution) [...]

City solicits input on Dorchester Avenue project

2016-02-05T16:37:02-05:00January 13th, 2016|Categories: Happenings, News|Tags: , |Comments Off on City solicits input on Dorchester Avenue project

By RICK WINTERSON During the second half of last year, the Boston Redevelopment Authority called for a series of community planning meetings. The objective was to develop a coherent plan for the west side of South Boston, stretching from north to south along Dorchester Avenue and including many areas alongside the avenue. The “shape” pictured above gives a rough picture of the area studied, which extends as far eastward as Old Colony Avenue. The BRA held six meetings at approximately monthly intervals from July through December 2015, all of them in the Local 7 Ironworkers Hall. The first one, held in July, was essentially an open house. A key step was to ask for all questions about the development of Dorchester Avenue on Post-It notes, [...]

Recognizing our city’s public safety servants

2018-11-27T13:06:37-05:00January 13th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Tags: |Comments Off on Recognizing our city’s public safety servants

By RAY FLYNN About halfway through the funeral Mass for longtime Hub firefighter and union leader Mike Mullane, police Commissioner William B. Evans could be seen hurriedly making his way through the capacity crowd. As Evans, who had been sitting in the front of Dorchester’s St. Brendan Church with Mayor Martin Walsh and fire Commissioner Joe Finn, made his way for the door, I whispered to my wife: “A cop must have been shot.” I don’t know how many other people in the church had the same thought, but in understanding the extreme dangers of being a police officer in today’s day and age — it was sadly the first thing I thought of. Just before the final message, Fr. Richard O’Donnell requested that we all say a prayer for the Boston police officer who was just shot a short distance away in Dorchester. After the moving service, [...]
