By Ginger DeShaney After pivoting to online events for the last two years because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the South Boston Neighborhood House’s benefit and auction will be held in person for a night of food, drinks, silent and live auctions, and dancing.  “This year we are super excited to be back in person,” said Kathy Lafferty, executive director of the Neighborhood House, also known as the Ollie. The House is Where the Heart Is gala will be held on Friday, April 8, in the Plaza Ballroom (with access to outdoor space) at the Seaport Hotel, starting at 6 p.m. Tickets are $125.  Because the online events were so popular, the gala will incorporate some virtual components this year. 2022-03-14T10:44:49-04:00March 14th, 2022|Categories: Featured, Happenings, Lifestyle, News|Comments Off on Expand, Rely, Respect, Equalize: City Outlines South Boston Seaport Strategic Transit Plan

The existing transportation infrastructure in the neighborhood – whether by car, transit, bike, or foot – can't handle the amount of expected growth in the South Boston Seaport District, city officials say. By 2030, the South Boston Seaport District is on track to be the second-largest employment district in the city with 89,000 jobs, said Matt Moran, transit team director of the Boston Transportation Department (BTD). And by 2030, the number of residents in the Seaport could reach approximately 31,000, matching other high-population neighborhoods in Boston.  “It's one of the fastest-growing areas within the state and possibly all of New England,” said Jim Fitzgerald, transportation planner with the Boston Planning and Development Agency (BPDA). The draft of the South Boston Seaport Strategic Transit Plan was [...]

2022-03-03T19:50:27-05:00March 3rd, 2022|Categories: Featured, Happenings, Lifestyle|Comments Off on Growing Concern: Fort Point Residents Fight to Save Trees from Demolition

Fort Point residents Rocco Giuliano and Philip Manna are working to save the 39 honey locust trees slated to be bulldozed on the site of Related Beal’s proposed ChannelSide development. Incorporating signs with tree facts, banners, and prayer flags, the duo from the 249 A Street Visual Artists Cooperative is raising awareness and fighting for the trees, which are tabbed to come down for the new development at 244-284 A Street. “Phil and I love those trees,” Giuliano said. “They are very beautiful trees.” In discussions with Stephen Faber, the executive vice president of Related Beal, and landscape developer Robert Adams of Halvorson, “it became apparent to us … that they intended to just destroy all these trees,” Giuliano said.  Giuliano told them the trees [...]

Broadway, opened in November.   Trerotola said South Boston’s growing population of young families and professionals appreciates what JOKR has to offer. “The access to grocery shopping in South Boston was limited, with not [...]

2022-01-31T09:26:41-05:00January 31st, 2022|Categories: Business, Featured, Happenings, Lifestyle|Comments Off on History Comes Alive at the Boston Bailey

By Ginger DeShaney The Boston Bailey B&B is the home of American history. Or at least a home of American history. The Boston Bailey, a 5-star registered short-term rental property at 101 P Street, is owned by Bill and Maureen Bailey. One suite is called “One By Land,” another is called “Two If by Sea,” and the third is “The Paul Revere Suite.” There’s also the “Tea Party Welcome Room.” The history brings people in, said Bill, a history buff who noted the house’s foundation dates to 1832-33 and the oldest frame goes back to 1875.  Bill was always reading “dry, old” history books even though he already knew the endings, he joked. “... you look at the virtue of the people back then when [...]

2022-01-22T11:18:17-05:00January 22nd, 2022|Categories: Featured, Happenings, Lifestyle, Sports|Comments Off on Open Skate at Murphy Rink

The Murphy Rink in South Boston is open for public skating until March 20 as part of the DCR’s program.  South Boston Online stopped by on a recent Sunday morning to check it out.  A group from East Boston was having a blast on the small rink while South Boston Youth Hockey games were being played on the large rink. The Eastie parents had been looking for a rink that was open in the morning – before naptime – and saw Murphy Rink offered that. The parents appreciated that a smaller rink was available for their young children, ages 2 and 3. The rink offers skate rentals, and for new skaters, crates and other aids are available. If you’re looking for a great activity this [...]

2022-01-20T19:41:22-05:00January 20th, 2022|Categories: Featured, Happenings, Lifestyle|Comments Off on DCR Presents Design Plan for Michael Joyce Playground

By Ginger DeShaney The Department of Conservation and Recreation and BSC Design Group held a public meeting Wednesday night to present their design – inspired by neighborhood kids – for improvements to the Michael Joyce Memorial Playground at Marine Park.  Residents and elected officials expressed concern that the meeting was not widely advertised, therefore many people didn’t know about it. DCR officials pledged to improve outreach and notification for the next public meeting in March. Danielle Mellett, a landscape architect for DCR, said they have been working with the McGrath family in memory of their son, Colin, through the Colin’s Joy Project and the Colin’s Creativity Squad to renovate the playground in a more inclusive and accessible footprint.  South Boston schoolchildren were involved in creating [...]

JOKR, an instant grocery delivery company at 301 W. Broadway, held a virtual abutters meeting Monday, Jan. Jan. 10, to discuss its plan to apply for a liquor license and got pushback from some residents and support from others.  The company, which launched in South Boston at the end of November, is looking to add alcohol delivery to its repertoire, as it does in New York. The virtual meeting drew almost 40 people. “I do not support the delivery of alcohol from this store,” said City Councilor Ed Flynn, who lives near the store and notes no residents have asked him to support this proposal. “I’m not sure if the demand is there for delivering alcohol and liquor in the neighborhood … I know it’s [...]

By Ginger DeShaney New City Councilor At-Large Erin Murphy was sworn in for the second time in a month on Monday, Jan. 3, 2022,  signaling the start of her official term. Murphy got a headstart in learning the ropes at City Hall after being sworn in on Dec. 1, 2021, to fill Mayor Michelle Wu’s at-large seat.  “It’s been exciting,” Murphy said in mid-December after her first few weeks. “I’ve been finding my way around.”  When Wu was sworn in early to finish out Marty Walsh’s term, her at-large seat from the 2019 election came open. The charter states that at-large council seats cannot go empty for any period of time, Murphy said. So, the seat was offered to the runner-up from the 2019 election, [...]
