By JUDITH NEE It was a very special day for the sixth, seventh and eighth grade students at the Perry School last Wednesday, as they were treated to a personal presentation by Boston Police Commissioner William Evans. Commissioner Evans returned to his roots to share, specifically with these children of an impressionable age, his story of overcoming adversity and achieving success. The commissioner was introduced to the students by k1 teacher Judy Nee. Ms. Nee relayed how she knew many of the students from the time they were four-year-old babies and that she, and the rest of the Perry staff, consider them family. These selfless volunteers come to the Club twice a week (weekday afternoons only) for a couple of hours to work on reading with the younger Clubhouse members. Training for a Generations, Incorporated, reading program is provided. Never let it be said that the literary scene in South Boston is somehow defeated or diminished by bad weather. The Friends of the South Boston Branch Library held their regular, periodic book sale Saturday, despite predictions of a snowstorm. The sales volunteers placed bookshelves outside, in utterly selfless defiance of Mother Nature and her wiles. The quick-frozen precipitation actually began before the book sale finished at its regularly scheduled closing hour of 3 p.m. Proceeds from the book sales go to support the Branch Library’s community activities that aren’t covered in the regular operating budget. Since then, commentaries from the sports media have been incessant – half of them (wrongfully) blaming everyone in sight; the other half making excuses for their forecasting the game (completely) wrong. A recent example was the fascinating talk, “First in Boston,” given by Jim Healy at the society’s meeting last Monday in the Public Room of the Branch Library. Healy’s historical background in Boston is a highly practical one – he’s the historian of the well-known Boston Duck Tours. After being introduced by society President Bob Allison, Healy began his list of Boston’s people, and their deeds, discoveries and inventions that were the first in the nation or in the world. The South Boston pee-wee A hockey team played in the finals of the district championship last Wednesday night in Dorchester. They played a hard fought game versus a worthy opponent, Winthrop. The Winthrop team struck quickly in the first period and took an early 1-0 lead. With the South Boston team needing a goal to tie it up, Lydon McGarrell took the puck from his own defensive zone and rushed through center ice and fired an equalizer past the Winthrop goalie. By KEVIN DEVLIN Hoop action was fast and furious at the Walsh Center gym this past weekend in the Gate of Heaven CYO cadet house league program. In the opening tilt, Cam Lapaglia (aka the Cash Man) hit a three-pointer from the wing to lead his team to a 34-31 win against the Representative Collins Club. Cam netted 12 points, including two treys, while Joey Maiullari scored nine points and Jake Harrison contributed five points. For the Collins Club, big man Walter Steele scored 17 points while Marc Iannaco had 10 points. Children’s author visits South Boston Catholic Academy

First-grade students at South Boston Catholic Academy recently had the opportunity to meet a children’s author, Mark Gabriele. He read one of his books,“ J.D.’s Scratch Match,” to the class and explained the process involved with writing a story from early drafts, rereading, editing and publishing. He also reminded them about writing dedications and why. The children had many questions for him and enjoyed his visit. We have some follow-up activities planned and he is looking forward to visiting us again. South Boston Catholic Academy is currently accepting applications for all classes, preschool through sixth grade. By South Boston Online staff If you value the traffic cone, lawn chair, trash barrel or other household objects you may have placed in your on-street parking spot, you may want to retrieve it. The city of Boston is collecting and throwing away these items. “Reminder for residents: No snow emergency was declared in Boston. Space savers will be removed as trash,” the city posted on its social media accounts Monday afternoon. Traffic cones and chairs were spotted on South Boston streets late Monday afternoon. Space savers are allowed for 48 hours after a snow emergency is declared, according to the city’s website.
