Another voice against the Grand Prix of South Boston

2018-11-27T13:06:36-05:00April 13th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Tags: |Comments Off on Another voice against the Grand Prix of South Boston

By RICK WINTERSON The City Point Neighborhood Association held its regular monthly meeting Tuesday evening. Topics included neighborhood updates, a triathlon presentation, and a report from Boston Police Station C-6, including an introduction of newly appointed District Capt. Joe Boyle. One key topic at the CPNA meeting concerned the proposed Grand Prix Boston races over this coming Labor Day weekend. Objections to this event were presented to the CPNA by Larry Bishoff of the Coalition Against IndyCar Boston, a volunteer group with pro bono legal counsel, which was formed to oppose the event. Terms such as “IndyCar” and Grand Prix have been used frequently to describe this proposed event, but officially it’s entitled “Grand Prix Boston.” That should probably be changed to “Grand Prix South [...]

2016-04-13T14:28:48-04:00April 13th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Comments Off on St. Brigid Church welcomes Sr. Evelyn back to South Boston

On Sunday, April 10, at the 10:30 a.m. family Mass at St. Brigid Church, (at which Fr. Robert Casey, our Pastor, was the celebrant), we welcomed Sr. Evelyn back to South Boston. She is enjoying her time at the Mother house in Nazareth, Ky., but misses her many friends in Boston. We are sure she will be eager to meet many of you during the time she will be visiting. Last year during her visit, at the age 100, she was out and about almost every day. Amazing! At age 101, which she turned on March 7, it will be no different! Happy belated birthday, Sr. Evelyn!

South Boston resident opens Castle Island Brewing Company

2016-04-06T15:36:14-04:00April 6th, 2016|Categories: Business, Featured|Tags: |Comments Off on South Boston resident opens Castle Island Brewing Company

By SUSAN DOUCET In 2009, Adam Romanow was brewing small batches of beer on top of his kitchen stove in South Boston. Now, he has 20,000 square feet where he can brew thousands of gallons of beer a day. Castle Island Brewing Company, born in South Boston, opened in Norwood this winter under Romanow, the founder and president, and a staff that is half South Boston residents or former residents. “It’s been a whirlwind, honestly,” he said Thursday afternoon, holding a sample of Jetty, a dry hop sour ale that had just been released that day. The brewery began brewing beer around Thanksgiving, opened Dec. 11, and started shipping beer the first week in January. The brewing company has large quantities of two beers – [...]

Gourmands gather for the 14th annual Taste of South Boston

2016-04-06T15:22:53-04:00April 6th, 2016|Categories: Business|Comments Off on Gourmands gather for the 14th annual Taste of South Boston

By RICK WINTERSON Perhaps as many as 400 honored guests – all of them gourmands – showed up at Sunday’s 14th Annual Taste of South Boston, which benefits the South Boston Neighborhood Development Corporation. Taste was held, as usual, in the Plaza Ballroom at the Seaport Hotel. Advance ticket sales amounted to more than 260; a number more showed up at the door to buy more tickets. The festivities lasted from 6 to 9 p.m. Twenty-nine restaurants and vendors provided food and drink galore. It bordered on the impossible to make one’s way to every establishment’s table and consume the generous samples of their wares.  Perhaps special mention should be made of Lucky’s Lounge, who came up with musical entertainment by pianist Ron Poster and his [...]

West Broadway is revitalized as ‘Big Broadway’

2016-04-06T15:20:20-04:00April 6th, 2016|Categories: News|Tags: |Comments Off on West Broadway is revitalized as ‘Big Broadway’

By RICK WINTERSON Back in the day – even in the 1990s when South Boston Online first began publishing – West Broadway was known as “Big” Broadway by those who were born and brought up here. But it fell upon hard times; now it’s back and it’s “big” once again. That is particularly true on the even-numbered side of West Broadway, across from the West Broadway Housing, which still looks new and well cared for. This is an update on new residences – only those proposed or under construction. (Discussing already occupied new residences and all the new shops, offices, and restaurants along West Broadway would take another two or three articles.) When walking up the left side of West Broadway from Broadway Station, the first [...]

Two fighters from Dorchester on the way up

2016-04-06T15:18:48-04:00April 6th, 2016|Categories: Sports|Comments Off on Two fighters from Dorchester on the way up

By KEVIN DEVLIN It’s good to talk to young people who have their entire lives in front of them and are following their dreams. Boxing is a tough profession, yet these two young men from Dorchester are willing to work hard, pay their dues, and hopefully, someday in the near future, see their dreams fulfilled. These two enthusiastic athletes are Jonathan DePina and Brian Lawrence. Jonathan DePina, 21, is the son of Leo and Gloria Pizarro-DePina. He has a younger brother, Giovanni and two sisters, Adriana and Naisha. He attended Madison Park High School and graduated in 2012. He lives in Savin Hill and is currently in the Sheet Metal Workers Local 17 apprentice program, which is located on Adams Street in Dorchester. When he [...]
