One last commentary on the Patriots

2016-02-05T16:13:23-05:00January 27th, 2016|Categories: Sports|Tags: |Comments Off on One last commentary on the Patriots

By RICK WINTERSON You are reading this column (published in the Jan. 28, 2016 issue) several days after the New England Patriots were beaten by the Denver Broncos for the 2016 American Football Conference Championship. Since then, commentaries from the sports media have been incessant – half of them (wrongfully) blaming everyone in sight; the other half making excuses for their forecasting the game (completely) wrong. Actually, the game unfolded simply. It was a mirror of the whole regular season. In sports, it’s often said, “Offense wins headlines, defense wins games.” Brady and his pass-catchers were stopped by the NFL-leading Denver defense. Proof: All season long, the Denver defense let in a low, league-leading 18 points-against per game. The Patriots’ score last Sunday? You guessed [...]

A local history lesson: “Firsts in Boston” presented at the South Boston Historical Society meeting

By RICK WINTERSON The South Boston Historical Society makes local history interesting. A recent example was the fascinating talk, “First in Boston,” given by Jim Healy at the society’s meeting last Monday in the Public Room of the Branch Library. Healy’s historical background in Boston is a highly practical one – he’s the historian of the well-known Boston Duck Tours. After being introduced by society President Bob Allison, Healy began his list of Boston’s people, and their deeds, discoveries and inventions that were the first in the nation or in the world. He fleshed out many of these with anecdotes. Healy listed his “firsts” in chronological order, beginning with items dating back to the 1630s, when the Puritans left England and founded Boston. You might be [...]

The South Boston pee-wee A hockey team played in the finals of the district championship last Wednesday night in Dorchester. They played a hard fought game versus a worthy opponent, Winthrop. The Winthrop team struck quickly in the first period and took an early 1-0 lead. With the South Boston team needing a goal to tie it up, Lydon McGarrell took the puck from his own defensive zone and rushed through center ice and fired an equalizer past the Winthrop goalie. The score remained tied 1-1 through regulation. The South Boston team continued to put pressure on Winthrop. South Boston goalie’s Joseph Hamilton remained tall in net. Defensemen Mick Crowley, Adam Alto, Brian Miller and Lydon McGarrell all remained strong and did not allow any [...]

First-grade students at South Boston Catholic Academy recently had the opportunity to meet a children’s author, Mark Gabriele. He read one of his books,“ J.D.’s Scratch Match,” to the class and explained the process involved with writing a story from early drafts, rereading, editing and publishing. He also reminded them about writing dedications and why. The children had many questions for him and enjoyed his visit. We have some follow-up activities planned and he is looking forward to visiting us again. South Boston Catholic Academy is currently accepting applications for all classes, preschool through sixth grade. We have Before School and After School Programs available and have small class size; high acceptance rate to Parochial, Private and Boston Exam Schools. Please contact Mrs. Barbara Keohane [...]

Updated flood maps shown at FEMA open house

2016-02-05T16:16:06-05:00January 20th, 2016|Categories: News|Tags: |Comments Off on Updated flood maps shown at FEMA open house

By RICK WINTERSON On Tuesday, Jan. 12, the Federal Emergency Management Agency held a well-attended Community Open House at the Boston Teachers Union Hall on Mt. Vernon Street. The primary purpose of the open house was to introduce Boston’s residents and landowners to FEMA’s updated “Flood Insurance Rate Maps.” Several hundred people attended, who kept coming and going throughout. The Open House was organized efficiently; the FEMA staff was well-informed and there was a pleasant buzz of interest. A bit of history: For decades, the federal government has provided flood zone maps to the public. The original maps were developed on the ground, using transits and telescopes. They were very useful, but current-day satellite technology (LiDAR) has allowed far more accurate flood maps to be made. [...]

Synthetic marijuana: What parents need to know and tell their kids

2018-11-27T13:06:37-05:00January 20th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Comments Off on Synthetic marijuana: What parents need to know and tell their kids

By KEVIN DEVLIN The legalization of marijuana, a consideration currently being studied by a group of state senators, is a topic that consistently garners plenty of attention. But synthetic marijuana, an altogether different substance, is a separate matter. Synthetic cannabis - or what is technically synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists - are ‘designer drugs’ which mimic the effect of marijuana sprayed onto a herbal-base material. Synthetic cannabis is commonly known as K2 and Spice, but have a myriad of brand names such as Ivory, Ocean Snow, Black Mamba, Purple Haze, Bliss, and Bombay Blue, to name just a few. It is much more powerful than marijuana and highly dangerous. Synthetic cannabis first went on sale in the early 2000s. You can buy it in a convenience [...]

Walsh delivers second State of the City address

2016-01-20T16:30:21-05:00January 20th, 2016|Categories: Featured, Happenings|Comments Off on Walsh delivers second State of the City address

By ELAINE FALLON Mayor Martin J. Walsh delivered his second State of the City speech (SOTC 16) on Tuesday evening, Jan. 19, in Symphony Hall. While acknowledging the many problems that the city of Boston still faces, the mayor was still emphatically upbeat. Progress in our city has ranged from reductions in crime, homicides and unemployment to the recent news about General Electric’s relocation to the South Boston waterfront. Symphony Hall was an ideal venue for SOTC 16. The acoustics in Boston’s historic cultural center are unmatched; the decor inside Symphony Hall is an ever-present reminder of the city’s heritage. Keith Lockhart of the Boston Pops remarked that music halls have historically served as gathering places for communities throughout the centuries. And the SOTC 16 [...]
