Letter to the editor: Quitting is not an option

As someone who worked in the mental health field for almost 41 years and as a police officer for the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health for 27.5 of those years, I see the ongoing overdose crisis as indeed a crisis. The latest in a series of pieces in the South Boston Online: You are right, it is much more than an issue, it is an epidemic or plague and it is killing too many of our folks, especially young people. I have written on this situation several times recently in my weekly commentary in the Charlestown Patriot-Bridge. We can't wish it away or say it is a problem for someone else not us. Sadly, by now this drug issue has impacted so many folks, so [...]

Drug series article No. 17: Addressing the ongoing crisis

This is No. 17 in South Boston Online’s series about drug use, abuse and addiction. The numbers are tragic. It is time to make a 2016 New Year resolution about the crucial issue of heroin - and we are being kind when we call it “an issue.” It’s at least an epidemic - more like an old-fashioned plague (deadlier than Ebola). You can help. Don’t let this continue. By RICK WINTERSON In his State of the Commonwealth speech last Thursday, Gov. Charlie Baker spoke eloquently about how dull his governing might seem, since he’s devoting his time to fixing things in the commonwealth – “minding the store.” But he made a key, specific point of singling out opioid abuse as a highly important issue. Baker [...]

South Boston’s Michael Bolstad: Bound for Brown University

2016-02-05T16:03:42-05:00January 27th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Comments Off on South Boston’s Michael Bolstad: Bound for Brown University

By KEVIN DEVLIN Michael Bolstad is definitely a mild, mannered young man, shy, and modest to a fault. He has focused on working hard with the goal of being accepted to a good school. And his dream paid off. He recently received an early acceptance letter and will be attending Brown University next fall. “I was shocked,” he said. “My mom was excited and started crying. She was proud at the same time as tears were streaming down her face. I’m excited to go…can’t wait.” Michael’s a senior at the Boston Collegiate Charter School (BCCS) in Dorchester. He’s currently taking four AP classes: government, environmental science, calculus and literature. He’s obviously an Honor Roll student, and although he doesn’t exactly know what he wants to [...]

By JUDITH NEE It was a very special day for the sixth, seventh and eighth grade students at the Perry School last Wednesday, as they were treated to a personal presentation by Boston Police Commissioner William Evans. Commissioner Evans returned to his roots to share, specifically with these children of an impressionable age, his story of overcoming adversity and achieving success. The commissioner was introduced to the students by k1 teacher Judy Nee. Ms. Nee relayed how she knew many of the students from the time they were four-year-old babies and that she, and the rest of the Perry staff, consider them family. She made it clear that she hoped the honest words they were about to hear from this good, strong leader would positively [...]

A local history lesson: “Firsts in Boston” presented at the South Boston Historical Society meeting

By RICK WINTERSON The South Boston Historical Society makes local history interesting. A recent example was the fascinating talk, “First in Boston,” given by Jim Healy at the society’s meeting last Monday in the Public Room of the Branch Library. Healy’s historical background in Boston is a highly practical one – he’s the historian of the well-known Boston Duck Tours. After being introduced by society President Bob Allison, Healy began his list of Boston’s people, and their deeds, discoveries and inventions that were the first in the nation or in the world. He fleshed out many of these with anecdotes. Healy listed his “firsts” in chronological order, beginning with items dating back to the 1630s, when the Puritans left England and founded Boston. You might be [...]

Children’s author visits South Boston Catholic Academy

2016-02-04T15:35:32-05:00January 27th, 2016|Categories: Happenings|Tags: |Comments Off on Children’s author visits South Boston Catholic Academy

First-grade students at South Boston Catholic Academy recently had the opportunity to meet a children’s author, Mark Gabriele. He read one of his books,“ J.D.’s Scratch Match,” to the class and explained the process involved with writing a story from early drafts, rereading, editing and publishing. He also reminded them about writing dedications and why. The children had many questions for him and enjoyed his visit. We have some follow-up activities planned and he is looking forward to visiting us again. South Boston Catholic Academy is currently accepting applications for all classes, preschool through sixth grade. We have Before School and After School Programs available and have small class size; high acceptance rate to Parochial, Private and Boston Exam Schools. Please contact Mrs. Barbara Keohane [...]
