By KEVIN DEVLIN Last weekend, the 13th annual John Cunniff Memorial Shamrock Tournament was held at the DCR Murphy Rink in South Boston. Four Pee Wee “A” teams – South Boston, the Cambridge Falcons, the Medford Mustangs, and the New England Predators – competed in this coveted tournament. South Boston defeated the New England Predators 1-0 in the championship game. This was only the second time that Southie took home the gold. Milton won in ’03, ‘04, and ’07. Dorchester won in ’05 and ’06. Duxbury won in ’08. Arlington won in ’09. The Conquistadors won in ’10 and ’12. Marblehead won in ’13 and the Terriers won in ’14. Last Saturday evening, March 5, the Gate of Heaven CYO girl’s high school age team lost at Catholic Memorial High School in the semi-finals of the State CYO tournament. But the girls had a great time playing and being with their friends off and on the court. Gate of Heaven boys team wins CYO Vicariate Tournament Championship

By KEVIN DEVLIN On Sunday, March 7, at Saint Agatha’s school gymnasium in Milton, the Gate of Heaven CYO fifth and sixth grade boys’ travel team defeated Saint Agatha’s of Milton, 27-14, to capture the CYO Vicariate Tournament Championship. Gatey took an early 9-2 lead and led at the half, 11-6. In the second half, Gatey went on a 9-5 run to take a 20-11 lead and went home with the championship medals and trophy. For Gatey, Conor Strickland was unstoppable as he netted 13 points, including one three-pointer from downtown. Max Hogan blocked two shots, had a handful of rebounds and scored six points. By KEVIN DEVLIN On Saturday, March 5, at the Walsh Center gym, the Gate of Heaven CYO instructional league and the John “Injun” Horan Memorial Girls’ House League held their end of the season all-star games. In the opening tilt, the instructional league all-stars, the Red Raiders defeated the Blue Bombers 12-6. In the John “Injun” Horan Girls’ League all-star game, the Blue Birds eked out a hard fought victory against the White Wonders, 35-33. Congratulations to the South Boston Mite 2 team for capturing the Providence Bruins Mite 2 jamboree at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence, Rhode Island. The kids from Southie went undefeated as they played and beat teams from Rhode Island, Connecticut,and New Jersey. South Boston started off itsmagical ride with Duncan Crowley netting the first goal of the tournament and the team never looked back. Lindsay Fox soon followed with the eventual game winner. Southie prevailed with a 2-1 victory over SWS Firehawks of Rhode Island. Stellar defense by Will Reidy and incredible goaltending by Ryan McGarrell propelled Southie to their first victory of the afternoon. By KEVIN DEVLIN On Sunday, Feb. 21, at the Walsh Center gym, Saint Vincent’s two CYO boys’ travel teams competed in the annual CYO Vicariate Tournament. The seventh and eighth grade team went home with a victory in the opening round by cruising to victory against Saint Agatha’s of Milton, while the fifth and sixth grade team lost to a talent-laden Saint Peter’s of Cambridge squad. The older boys’ squad is coached by Billy Allen and Alhaji Mansaray. They were 9-3 during the regular season and continued their winning ways against coach John Timmins’ team from Milton. Such optimism abounds as the South Boston Stars spring soccer and basketball teams get ready to rumble. This upcoming season, from March through late May, the Southie Stars will be fielding three hoop teams and one soccer team. Southie Stars founder, Marc Iannaco, is coaching the Under 12 and Under 13 boys’ hoop teams, while Megan Cheeseman will be coaching the eighth-grade girls’ hoop team. Basketball practices will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the South Boston Catholic Academy gym. They started Tuesday, Feb. 23.
